OK Steering Guru's...

I have a 94 Formula M6, 92k miles. I am gettign the classic steering wheel slop so I figure I will get into the front end and see what is going on. The 12-6 test on the wheels is solid, no play whatsoever.

On the 9-3 there is a bit of play, so I figure it's outer tie rod ends. No problem. I go buy the parts and take the front wheels off. Now I grab the rotor to see if the play is still there and when I do I can move both front rotors side to side about 1/4 to 1/2" either direction. In the process, the steering wheel is turning, basically a few inches in either direction.

Seems to be an exact replica of the play I have on the road.

Is this normal? I am suspecting a steering rack that is out of adjustment or broken, although it it not leaking or showing any other signs of wear. Fluid is right on the money and clean. Rag Joint is a bit worn, but still solid. I have stock exhaust.

Anyone have any thoughts at all? I have searched to no avail. Help is appreciated as always.

Matt

Have a friend turn the wheel back and forth while you watch the steering/front suspension components. Doing this I found that my steering rack pinion gear would move in and out of the rack about a 1/4". I replaced the rack, problem solved. I got a rebuilt rack off the internet for $130 (refundable core charge). Looks identical to the stock one and works great.

Good thought. I am just wonderingn if the same problem you described in the rack is allowing me to move the steering wheel by moving the rotor back and forth. Seems like that could be a pinion gear issue.
