odditty with rack and pinion
odditty with rack and pinion
Since this is more of a "suspension" then "drivetrain" topic i'm posting it here.
The story: When i bought the car the steering was fine, but then about 2 weeks later it started to click. Now 4.5 months later i finally decided to do something about it.
The problem: It clicks when going around corners no matter how fast or slow you turned the wheel. It would click in certain spots and only those spots every single time. Every now and then it wouldn't click, like once a month.
The fix: So i got mad and started unbolting the rack and pinion and got it out but couldn't disconnect the second line from the pump into the rack, i only got one off. I flushed it by turning it back and forth numerous times until nothing came out. Mad as all get out i decided not to put the new/used rack and pinion i got from the junkyard in. So i just screwed the line back in, bolted it back up (WAY easier said then done) and filled it with some new fluid. Took it out of the garage and turned the whell. Absolutely no clicking. Then i drove it, nothing, perfect, even felt a little tighter.
My question: What in the world caused this clicking that was fixed simply by flushing it? There were no metal pieces in the old fluid (took a magnet to it even) Seriously all i did was take it out (which took 4 hours) then spent another 2.5 hours trying to find out how to get it back in, then another 1.5 bolting it up, adding fluid, and driving it. So 8.5 hours later, WHAT CAUSED THE CLICKING THAT GOT FIXED BY CHANGING THE FLUID?!
I want to know really bad since i wasted $50 on a new rack and pinion i'm not going to use now.
