Unhappy Newbie question about ball joints?

....Guys, i need some help. I ordered new ball joint for my front end and they came. Each kit contained 1 ball joint, 1 grease fitting, 1 rubber boot and 1 kotter key as well as the ball joint nut. These are for the lower control arms just so you know. Mt question is this: Is the rubber boot supposed to go in first, then the ball joint slid on top as it is pressed in or does the rubber boot just set on top of the ball joint once its pressed in? I was told by someone that they thought the boot just sits on top of the ball joint once it has been pressed in and that when the steering knuckle is attached to the ball joint stud that the rubber boot will hold the grease in??? I really need to know the correct way if anyone can help me please.

Here is a pic of what i have.......
