mystery thump sound

I have been hearing a thumping sound coming from under my car, sounds like it's coming from around the passenger side rear axle/tire area.I've been under there a half dozen times trying to find the source of the noise but no luck, checked exhaust clearance, all the bolts I could find, also checked for loose spare tire but that's secure also. It's driving me crazy.Any ideas before I give up & take it to the shop ? I really hate doing that cause I like to fix things myself but I can't fix what I can't find !!! Thanks !

Re: mystery thump sound

any more details on exactly when this happens?

95% of my general thumping and banging noises came were fixed with by replacing the trans mount.. It was completley broken thru!

Re: mystery thump sound

Oops ! Sorry ! Sound happens when going over bumps in the road, railroad tracks, etcDoesn't have to be big bumps & although it does it most of the time it doesn't do it everytime.I thought about the trans mount but since the sound seems to be coming from the back I figured that wasn't it.I will check it just to be sure though. If it were a trans mount wouldn't it jump or make some noise when I light up the rear tires ?

Re: mystery thump sound

Start with the obvious. Are all your bolts tight (lca, phb, shock, wheels, calipers, etc)? Exhaust hangers in good shape? If you have zerts are your LCA bushings greased, slack in your swaybar end links, etc? Look for any signs of contact (paint rubbed off, rub marks on tires, shiny rub spots on exhaust. If none of these, go ahead and check the trans mount and TA.

Re: mystery thump sound

I did ck all the things you guys mentioned, but I'm going to go over it all again just to make sure.I've been checking it up on ramps.Would it be better up on jack stands so the weight is off the tires or the way I'm doing it ?

Re: mystery thump sound

check to make sure your spring is seated in the mount. i had some custom pigtails that were pushed to one side and were hitting the sway bar...i had to push them towards the front of the car for clearance. also, if you have a busted rubber boot for the spring that's in bad shape that may do it too.

You can drop the springs by raising the rear end from the body in front of the rear tires, then remove the shocks and the rear end will drop enough to get the springs out.

Re: mystery thump sound

Thanks for all your help & suggestions ! It turned out to be coming from the LCA,I could've sworn I checked the bolts before, although I may have missed that one,but one bolt was loose by about 1/2-3/4 of a turn & that did it !!! For the noise it was causing you'd have thought something was going to drop off the bottom of my car ! Again,my thanks !
