LS1 Rear Brakes-Need Help Please

Hey guys. Hopefully someone has done this swap!

I have the LS1 calipers and backing plates and braided lines, and I want to put these on a 97 LT1 10 bolt rear. I am thinking that these are a direct bolt-on part but not 100% sure.

Do I need longer studs on the axles to make the LS1 rotors work on a 97 LT1 rear end?

A list of all that I need would be great!

Thanks!

You need all the ls1 rear brake parts. The hard lines on the axle are different but can probably be bent to work. You will need the ls1 parking brake cables and the bracket they attach to. The axle shafts are slightly different lengths than the lt1 shafts. That may lead to misalignment of the caliper and rotor. If you have all the parts it's an easy swap but the only real gain is a better parking brake.

I'm in the middle of this mod right now, I will have to put .125 spacers between the LS1 backing plates and axle to center the rotors in the LS1 abutments. That is required because the LT1 axles are longer than the LS1 axles. I ran across a guy who had some of these spacers made. He sells them for 30 per set. PM if you want his email.

Got the spacers and rear LS1 brakes installed, the rotors are centered perfectly on one side and nearly perfect on the other.

Spacers?

OK I get it now. By "centered" you mean the calipers slide over the rotors properly because the rotors are out enough and are where they should be.

GM makes a .024 shim (p/n 26034667) which goes in between the axle tube and the caliper axle plate to allow for additional outboard adjustment of the caliper relatve to the rotor. If your caliper is a little inboard, one or two of these would work; downside is you have to pull the axle. The LT1 spec from inboard side of the caliper plate to outside of axle flange is 2.70 to 2.74 so you can determine if the LT1 axle is per spec.

By centered I mean the rotor is centered in the abutment. On my project the outside of the rotor actually hit the abutment, these spacers are .125 thick and moved the backing plate and thus abutment to the outside a perfect amount.

The abutment to rotor alignment is what is critical - the calipers and pads simply float on the abutment pins.
