Question Installing control arm bushings and tie end rods

Just wondering how difficult it is to replave the inner and outer tie end rods? Also how hard is it to replace the upper control arm bushings and ball joint? Any special tools I need?

Re: Installing control arm bushings and tie end rods

Tie rod ends are easy, usually it's the outer tie rod that fails, not the inner. Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut, remove castle nut and use a tie rod separator (threaded clamp style makes it easy - $9 from Harbor Freight) to press out the tie rod ball joint. Loosen the jam nut and unthread the outer tie rod end, counting the number of turns so that you can install the new one in the same location.

Upper ball joint is rivited in place; drill out the rivits and the new one comes with hardware to install. I recommend Moog replacement parts.

The upper bushings are tricker. You'll need to remove the shock/spring assembly. The old bushings need to be melted off with a torch.
