Question E-Brake light came on when I slammed the gas...

I jerked the e-brake up and put it back down and the instrumental panel e-brake light turned off. But now it seems to come on quite frequently when I don't even have the e-brake pulled up. And it feels like my brakes MIGHT be dragging, but it may be in my head. Also, when I pull the e-brake up, it doesn't slow or stop the car. And it is very hard to pull up. Since I bought the car, sometimes I would pull the lever up and sometimes it would seem to snap and keep going backward. PLease help!

Kurt.....

This is not the first time I've asked you this... in fact its the second post of yours I've moved in the last 10 minutes. PLEASE post on the correct forum. A question about brakes does not belong on "LT1 Engine Tech".

Also.... do NOT force your post to the top more than once in a 24-hour period. Brent has a post "stickied" to the top of the forum regarding abuse of "TTT" (and variations thereof.

PLEASE follow the rules.

Re: E-Brake light came on when I slammed the gas...

the ebrake switch is just a tiny little thing mounted to the base of the ebrake handle, atleast it is in my 3rd gen

u can get under the car to see if the cables have snapped, but easier than that is to have a friend pull the ebrake with the wheel and drum off, and watch the shoe(s) move ******d (sometimes only one shoe moves because there is no drum to stop its movement)

if it moves a little bit, but no enough to stop the wheel
or if the ebrake handle goes all the way up before the wheels are locked
then u need to readjust the cable
which in my opinion is a major pain in the ***
because the one cable from the handle meets up with the two cables rom the drums right above the torque arm, the drive shaft and the exhaust, and for me the bolt is too long for a deep socket and ratchet i have to use open end wrenchs

u should check to see if the shoes and drums have the proper clearance or need to be adjusted, usually the self adjust will take care of that when u brake in reverse

On 4th gen Z28s, the e-brake works by mechanically (cable) actuating the rear calipers.

And mine BLOWS, too. No friction and hard to pull up.

Re: E-Brake light came on when I slammed the gas...

I'm wondering if a broken or frozen caliper may be causing my ebrake lever to bind up. However, I have no idea why the e-brake light would come on.

Where is the cable located on a 4th gen. Do I have to take the tranny down?

Sorry Injuneer. I honestly did not take the time to look and see if there was a section for brakes.

it's located above the torque arm/driveshaft in the tunnel. it's a pain to get to. i would just take it to a brake shop, preferrably one that knows who you are and wont rip you a new one. i had sears do mine when i got new tires and they didnt charge me a thing. i go in every year and spend a good chunk of change and i buy tools a lot, so they all know me...any way, that's my way of doing it
