difficulty of installing poly bushings
difficulty of installing poly bushings
I need to know how hard it is to install poly bushings in my camaro. I want to do a master set. I am not too worried about putting the polys in but I am curious as to how I am supposed to take out the old rubber. I saw someone saying something about burning them out, but I don't want to change the temper of the metal. I will do this if I have to. Is there anything that I should know about before doing this?
Re: difficulty of installing poly bushings
You don't need any more heat than you can get out of a propane torch. You are basically heating the rubber until it melts and/or catches on fire. Messy.... but I don't think you are going to significantly alter the strength characteristics of the metal in the A-arms. If you are still concerned, take the A-arms to a shop and have the old bushings pressed out.

sweet, I thought about buying a propane torch to do it, since I don't have a real torch here. Thanks alot injuneerzz. You have been tons of help. Thanks for your time and expertize. You're the man.
Re: difficulty of installing poly bushings
I use an old drill bit to drill into the rubber, after a couple minutes with the drill you can push the remaining rubber and the inner sleave out by hand. Then the outer sleave comes right out with an air chisel or normal chisel and BFH. It's alot easier and cleaner than the fire method
I used an energy suspension master set in my 88 and am very pleased with the ride and handling though it does get a little rough on some Boston back roads (then again what car doesn't get rough through 8" pot holes)
