can someone explain brake space to me?? long post...

im building a 88 gt mustang for my girlfriend. and am making my own rearend.or at least cutting down a ford 9" i had laying around.i have already ordered my control arms, and currie interprizes sells the mount kit "the pieces that actually get welded to the rear"im pretty confident i can get that all lined up pretty good. my problems come into hows do i know how far to cut for the axel tubes??most brake kits i see, have a brake space of approx 2.5"and im assuming that when they say "brake space" that is the measurement between the end of the axel tube to the outside of the axel?and how would this be measured? outside of the axel tube to the inside of the axel? any help would be greatly appreciated. and i know this is for a mustang.but you have to make the misses happy. and its helping me learn. we have stripped the whole car,and have it in primer, pretty much ready for paint now. and im wanting to custom build the rearend.im building a pretty stout 306,and hoping to install a cobra 6 speed.if they come off there high horse on price sometime soon.anyways thanks again.

p.s. i get more help from you guys on this site. its hard to get any answer on the mustang forums. thanks again.
