Brake Upgrade

Is there really no real braking difference from the C5 version to the LS1 F Body version?

I want to do a brake conversion but not totally sure on which direction I should go in. I'll spend the extra cash, but spending $800 on the C5 conversion, aren't I just better off getting the Wilwood kit for $1100 or whatever it cost? 6 Piston Calipers and 13" rotors?

Re: Brake Upgrade

I initially upgraded my brakes with the LS1 parts. Later I upgraded to C5 rotors and kept the LS1 calipers. Now I also installed Powerslot rotors and Hawk HPS pads, but there was a huge difference in braking.

Besides...They do a great job of filling up the 17" SS wheels.

What brake lines are you using? Also are you using brake pads for a fbody or a vette? Thanks

I believe that a 13" rotor is going to force you to run 18" wheels. So that's something to consider if you're not already running them.

I have the LS1 conversion, and love it compared to the stock LT1 brakes. Did WONDERS for my confidence in braking the car.

On another note, I didn't realize you could run a vette rotor with the LS1 caliper. What's required to do that? And are they less likely to warp than the stock LS1 rotors?

Re: Brake Upgrade

You can run the 13" rotors behind the 17" wheels, just not Firehawk wheels IIRC.

Any stock GM rotor is more likely to warp than aftermarket. They're too light. You can get good replacements for LS1 rotors for ~$50/ea so why run the light stockers?

From LS1 to C5 rotors you need a bracket and lines. UMI sells the brackets. Not sure if they'll work on an LT1 car though.

Various 17" rims support 13" rotors. I have the 17" Enkei Winn rims; the C5 setup wouldn't clear but the Baer 13" system did. My friend has 17" SS style rims and the C5 setup fits.

Re: Brake Upgrade

i bought the ls1 upgrade for $125. all i did to that was slotted rotors at all four corners and it stops on a dime. i seen the c5 brackets on ebay for 215(both sides) not a bad price if you have the ls1 setup all ready.

Wrong...

The C5 calipers are pressure cast, not gravity cast. And they also have stiffening ribs cast into them, which helps the caliper resist spreading. The C5 caliper is a better caliper for sure. The only people that will try to tell you that the LS1 caliper is as good are the people that cheapened out and are running the F body caliper with the C5 rotors
