Brake life
Brake life
Hi - I have 2000 Z28 M6 all stock with 29,000 miles on it. I'm not hard on it at all. Don't get me wrong on open roads I'll open it up, but I by no means abuse this car. I just went in to the dealer for a NY State inspection and they are telling me that I need to replace the rear brakes and the fronts are probably good until my next oil change. My question is, do the brakes wear this quickly on this car? I mean that doesn't seem too good. My brother had an '89 Trans Am that he owned from 1992 - 2000 and replaced his front brakes once, and he put a lot of hard miles on that car. If any one could let me know the average life of the brakes please let me know. Thank you - Nick
29K to change pads is normal. I'm surpised your brother drove his TA for 8 years and only changed pads once. Also is this the first time you'll be changing pads? I surprised that your rear pads look worse then your front pads.
I change my pads probably every 15-20K or so...

I don't see how your pads could be gone yet with not real hard driving on them. My dad lumina had over 100k before he changed. I have over 60k on my last brake job and still got lots of pads. The GM are ok, and they should last more than 30k, I would take off my wheel and look myself on it. I know if your hard on them 29k might be right, but i don't think you are by your post.
how are your rears worn more?
do you do lots of brake stands?
you should replace your fronts twice, and on the second time do the rears.
the first time pads, and the second time pads and rotors.
unless you have the money, then good rotors are a good idea too on the front.
at 29k miles I really cants see it? I have almost 20k and the rears are damn near new, and the fronts arent looking to bad either.

Thanks for all of your input. I don't do brake stands and I too can't understand the rears before the fronts. I think the dealer is trying to make a little extra off of the inspection. In NY an inspection station is supposed to legally check out all of this stuff on your car and tie up a bay and a mechanic for like an hour and a half and they really don't make any money off of it. Thanks again this board has helped me to get an idea of what to expect from my car. I don't think there is a more informative and friendly F-Body forum out there. - Thanks
I'd recomend taking a look and seeing what they look like.
you should be able to see the squeel clip (or whatever you want to call the part that touches the rotor when the pad is nearing the end of its life) jsut see how far off the rotor it is, should be 3mm or more with your milage.
the fronts should be about the same too.
