Brake fluid change

OK guys, dumb question. What all do you have to do the chaneg out all the fluid? I'm going with some DOT 5.1 stuff. I figured I'd just bleed them and bleed them until all new fluid comes out. Is it really that easy?

Re: Brake fluid change

DOT 5.1? Not familiar with that; makes sure it's compatable with your stock DOT 3 fluid. I use Valvoline SynPower; it exceeds DOT 4 rating, fully compatable with stock fluid and is cheap!

Re: Brake fluid change

DOT 5.1 is compatible, and should be fine. It's DOT 5 that's silicone-based and will cause trouble in the brake system.

I'd do exactly what you're suggesting - bleed until the new stuff comes through each caliper and the ABS.

Re: Brake fluid change

Trust me, spend $30 bucks for the vacuum pump. Makes everything easy and brake fluid is more contained. I'm using Wilwood 570 degree brake fluid.

Re: Brake fluid change

Use prestone synthetic dot 3. Its cheap at autozone and has a high boiling point.

Re: Brake fluid change

When changing fluid (a fluid flush) I typically either suck the fluid out of the MC or bleed till I ALMOST run the reservoir dry.

I then refill with the fresh fluid.

This reduces the amount of new fluid that gets contaminated with the old fluid.
It also makes it easier to see when the new fluid arrives at the caliper.
