Valvoline Synthetic is NOT 'DOT 5' [which is Silicone based]
It exceeds and IS compatible with DOT 3 or 4 specs, and it is not 'Silicone base'[DOT 5]
Exceeding DOT 3 or 4, does not make it DOT 5[confused yet?]
You do not need to purge/flush the system to use DOT 3 or 4 in it..
For DOT 5 SILICONE base fluid, yes you would have to get all the ethylene glycol based fluid OUT.. they do not mix..
I believe you have this Synthetic fluid confused with DOT 5..

Re: Brake Fluid????
Does the DOT 3 eat paint as bad as DOT 4 or are they basically the same when it comes to eating paint?Reason i'm asking is I just repainted my engine bay and i'd hate to ruin my new paint so whichever is not as bad on the paint is what i'll go with.I'd like to go with DOT 5 that does not eat paint but i'd rather not flush the system, unless it's something simple to do.
Whats everybody else running,DOT 3,4,or 5?Also,I was just curious, what does DOT stand for?
Thanks,
James

Re: Brake Fluid????
I run DOT 4, because of a higher boiling point; I do alot of driving... DOT= Dept Of Transportation
Brake fluid will not eat paint right away... If you spill alittle on the paint just wipe it off ASAP...
As stated in the web site above, DOT3 is the most common.....

Re: Brake Fluid????
I know quite a few that use the Valvoline 'Synpower' synthetic.. surprised no one posted but me.. exceeds DOT 4
If you spill it, just get it off fast ..it doesn't eat paint right before your eyes.. if left on there it can though [as will any brake fluid except the silicone based DOT 5]
DOT, yes, means Dept Of Transportation, which sets the 'standards' for motor vehicles in the US..
