Does anyone have actual reasons behind these recommendations?

A good recommendation really can't be given at all without some information about what you want from the car. It'd also be nice to know if you have stock springs and other suspension stuff.

They are both self adjusting; however Tokico's aren't as good with lowered vehicles or performance springs (Eibach, etc) as Bilstein's are. Too much bounce.

Bilstein's are stiffer so you will handle better in the corners, braking and accelerating.

Tokico is cheaper than Bilstein though.

Bilstein Accolades:

- Dale Earnhardt won 7 Winston Cup Championships on Bilsteins
- Rod Millen/Ivan Stewart won 11 manufacturer's Cup Challenge Titles on Bilsteins
- Ron Hornaday/Mike Skinner won the Craftsman Truck Championship on Bilsteins
- Brett Hearn won 28 times in Late Model Dirt Modified on Bilsteins
- Larry Schumacher won the Exxon GTS2 division in a Porsche on Bilsteins

It does come down to personal preference in the long run. Hope that helps.
