Big Brakes
Big Brakes
Ive always wanted to upgrade my brakes but since doing some road course it has become a necessity. I have seen ZO6 upgrades but I understand you need a bracket that isnt being made anymore. Does anyone have any experience with the Wilwood 6 piston setup? Its the biggest and cheapest I can find but it seems wilwood is more into looks than racing? I cant afford the Brembo setup. Baer/Alcon is the most reputable and in the mid range as far as I know but I just dont know anyone who races Fbodies. Anyone know what is best/most reliable?
Thanks,
Pat

Now one more question-
My cousin had the Wilwood kit, front and back on his 2000 SS. Although he never got to autocross it prior to selling the car, holy crap what a difference. They fit behind the factory 17" ZR-1 style rims without any spacers or anything. The difference is incredible and his impression of them is they are very worth it. He has taken a few of the Skip Barber driving courses and one or two other miscellaneous ones, so I think it is a valid impression.
The only downside is that Wilwood makes all their own pads, so that is your only source for replacements. As a result, you need to buy multiple pairs at a time since their stock on hand seemed to be low or on back order for certain compounds.

www.stoptech.com makes some serious brakes for F-bodies. $1995. that is for fronts only. way better than wildwoods. no comparison in an road race environment.
I would second 2mchpwr’s recommendation. If Stoptech has made some progress on making a rotor hat with the proper offset for our cars, then it is clearly the best big brake system for F-bodies under the $2800 Brembo setup, and possibly better than the Brembo. You might read through the following thread:
http://www.corner-carvers.com/forums...threadid=10774 and call Stoptech to see if they have re-designed the hats for F-bodies. Of course, you can get custom wheels, which is what that user did, but the CCW’s will add another $1800 to the cost of the brakes. I don’t like forcing the wrong thing to work in an application where the right thing exists, so I am not a fan of wheel spacers.
The street legal Wilwood systems I have seen appear, to me, to be mainly a cosmetic upgrade. The people I have met who have used them on the race track have only used them for one season, and then bought something else. The Stoptech caliper is incomparably better than the light Wilwood calipers, uses a much larger pad, and has a tremendous selection of aftermarket pads available for it, both street and race. By the time you “upgrade” a Wilwood system to use an adequately thick rotor, you will be within $200 to $300 dollars of the Stoptech system anyway. Actual racers use Stoptech kits. The only real racers that use Wilwoods DO NOT use the kits. They purchase the big heavy-duty Wilwood calipers, and make their own adaptor brackets and get custom rotors. I say all of this in the context of cars that weigh over 2,200 lbs.; Bandolero cars may be fine with Wilwood kits, even though those brakes would not be street legal.
