Another C5 brake conversion finished! (pics)

The C5 brakes are on the car and functional. They make a pretty big difference; the car really stands on its nose now when you step on the middle pedal (and the pads aren't even broken in yet). Instalation wasn't tooooo bad... there was a LOT more spindle cutting than I expected. I used a 4" angle grinder... don't even think about a sawzall unless you really like punishment. The only bad part was when I broke off one of the "hardened" bolts inside the spindle. That MFer was fun to get out too. Oh, those aren't Z06 calipers, I just painted the standard ones red... and I painted my stock rear calipers red too. Ceramic pads all around. 2001 corvette rotors and calipers off ebay= $103. Conversion brackets off of ebay= $90. Class 10.9 metric bolts= $20. Morse ceramic pads (Corvette fronts, Camaro rears= $80. Of course it cost a lot to ship all that stuff, but I still ended up saving a couple hundred bucks or so versus the Kore3 kit.

Nice work, not bad on the total cost either.

Did you strip them down first? How'd you do it? I was thinking about doing that (keeping the stock appearance )

I used a dremel to rough up the flat parts, 60 grit sandpaper to do the curvey parts. It took hours and hours. 2 coats XIM primer and about 4 coats of gloss enamel. Turned out pretty good for a spray can job.

would you happen to know the bolt sizes i'll need to pick up to do the swap? I have the caliper to hub brackets, calipers and abutment brackets but no bolts. the car and parts are 200 miles away from me right now and I'd like to just go pick up the parts so I can do the work when i'm there rather than spending my time chasing parts.

Thanks.

(8) 10.9 grade size 10mm x 1.5 x 65mm (+ washers) and (4) 10.9 grade size 14mm x 2 x 70mm (+ washers). I ordered mine from boltdepot.com.

C5 brake conversion

I've been considering this upgrade myself. eBay seller 1976ls1, will give me the adaptor plates for it. He tells me this much:

If you use a C6 rotor you need the C6 caliber.
The HD brk. only works with the LS1 spindle. (This is the Z06 brake pkg)
This would help if you were tracking or road racing your
car. Its not needed on a steet car.
hope this helps Dale

-1976ls1

Additionally, I call the parts line at the local Chevy dealer, and he tells me that the 97 Vs 98 spindles are different. It seems clear that I can definitely go with the C5 brakes, but unclear as to the Z06 pkg. The link to CamaroSSworld.com says the spindle change occurred in 96, but all others are telling me it was in 98, when the changeover from LT1 to LS1 happened.

are you referring to the C6 Z06 brakes?
the front spindles changed w/ the 98 when the ls1 went in the car. the brackets are the same for either swap but you have to cut the LT1 spindles up a lot more to make them work. I picked up a set of LS1 spindles w/ hubs for $40 shipped on ebay, you just have to keep an eye out. I got my entire swap kit for under $300 for all new parts.
