ABS INOP light randomly on.

if this isnt the right forum, please move.

it just recently began to do this, and ive been searching through other posts, but nothing sounds similar...about 2 weeks ago, i was just driving and my ABS INOP light came on...no biggie i thought, it usually happens after i dyno...it went right away about 5 minutes later...then about 10 miles from home it starts to flash, and then once i got on the brakes heavy it stayed solid....for about a week after it was gone...now it recently is on all the time...i have no idea what it could be though, but i get a loud thumping noise from my rear passenger side tire area during heavy braking now, never had it before...anyone have any ideas, id be very appreciative.

also, my ebrake sensor is disconnected from the handle, but i dont think that would cause an issue with the ABS would it? and i also just swapped to an M6 from an A4...only have the VSS wired up...no Rev Lockout or Rev Lights..but the ligth thing was a few days after the completion of the swap and driving around on it.

Re: ABS INOP light randomly on.

I had problems with my ABS light coming off an on from time to time. After a few weeks of this it finally stayed on all the time. Then I began to see the LOW TRAC light from time to time. I needed new brakes anyway so I changed the pads all the way around and I haven't had any problems since.

2 quick suggestions. Put your location in your by line on the left under your name and the other is put more information about your vehicle in your signature. Include changes like the tranny. As far as the ABS light is concerned, it could be hundreds of things. It's best to scan it for code and reset it. Then scan it to be sure the same code returns if it comes on again. Then go from there.

If you have recently replace your brake pads this is probably it. Using a C clamp to push the pistons back causes the fluid to flow backwards which is often very dirty and this can instantly clog up the ABS pump. I just removed my ABS relay and fuses and don't worry about it now.

Re: ABS INOP light randomly on.

slopoke is right, could be many things but here are the most common.
1. Wheel speed sensor and/or hub bearing (don't remember if they're an assy.)
2. abs module/ebcm
3. ignition switch - many gm cars have the abs run through the ignition circuit
4. battery
5. the wiring related to any of these

Good luck,
Jason

Yup, could be lots of things, but check the ground wires on the passenger side fender near the big red positive block first.

Not haveing the emergancy brake switch hooked up will cause a light.

A burned out 3rd brake light will also cause it. I believe reverse lights might also.

A bad ABS pump might too.

Mine was throwing an ABS code and it turns out one of my plug wires was too close to an ABS sensor wire, probably screwing with the signal. You should check it's not something simple like that before you start changing parts.
