abs inop light on, but abs works

my light on the dash for abs stays lit, usually comes on after i start moving. but today i had to slam my brakes on a wet road and it shouldve locked up but i felt the abs kick in and it rolled to a quick stop. what would make the light stay on?

Bad bulb or have you installed a 98+ SS spoiler? If so that is why it stays on

Bad bulb , bulbs fail open (won't light). Could be a faulty ground; many of the dash lights have there grounds connected on the grond post of the passanger side front fender, next to the red positive cap. Disconnect the battery ground terminal, remove the wire from the ground post, remove the ground post and sand away the body paint under the post, then reinstall in reverse order.

Actually I had a bulb out in my third brake light and it turned the light on. As soon as I replaced it the light went off

Do we assume the light is not lit when the car is first started since you said it usually comes on after you start moving?

If that's the case, you have a soft failure and those are usually due to a fautly wheel sensor. A bad third brake light makes it come on even before you start moving. Rather than guess which one, scan it and find out for sure. If you did any work recently near the wheel sensors like brakes etc, you may have disturbed the connection at the sensor. May just take a look at the front wheels and at the differential.

In addition, when the ABS is activated, the LOW TRAC light will illuminate. In your brake incident the other day, did the low trac light come on? Chances are you didn't actually activate the ABS.

Re: abs inop light on, but abs works

The "LOW TRAC" light has nothing to do with traction control. Any F body that has ABS, has that light to alert the driver of a wheel lock up situation that the system intervened. Check the instrument panel the next time the car is started during the light check phase of computer warm up for the light.

As far as any ABS problems that illuminates the "ABS INOP" light, it's best to scan it, reset the EBCM and try it again to see if the same code returns. Once the code is retrieved, you use a diagnostic technique to fiind the actual cause of the problem.

So my advise is to scan it and stop wasting time. 93 engine DTC's can be retrieved with a jumper placed in the DLC. I don't know however, if it will pull ABS codes but since it's cheap to do, give it a try. See shoebox's web site for instructions on how to pull codes with a jumper on 93's.
