"ABS INOP" Light?

My "ABS INOP" light comes on at random intervals. I'll be driving along, it'll turn on, and then it just stays on until I shut the car off and then restart. Sometimes it will be on at startup, sometimes it won't. The car seems fine, although I haven't had to get on the brakes hard enough for the ABS to kick in, so it may be having issues. Is this something I should worry about?

I haven't noticed more brake dust in the rear than the front, but I haven't really been looking either. I'm gonna wash her again this weekend, I'll make sure I look for that.

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

check your third brake light on the spoiler, if one of them is out that usually throws the ABS INOP light.

weird i know but its exactly what happened to me, fixed it and no more light

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

ABS inop light can be caused by a couple things. Bad third brake light in the spoiler as mentioned, the ABS cable or sensor that goes to your rear differential can be bad, or a bad wheel sensor either on the left or right side front of the car. I have a ABS inop light on all the time. My problem is that the cable that goes to the rear ABS sensor located in your differential was cut. It wasn't repairable. I still have yet to purchase a new cable.

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

I had the same problem this week. I did a search and tried all the regular things like grounds and bulbs. I finally hooked it up to my computer and it said it was the front left sensor causing the problem. I took the wheel off and cleaned the contacts and so far haven't seen the light since. Used to just randomly come on the when I restart the car would be off for a while.

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

Another common problem is the ground located on the RH shock tower. Try cleaning and tightening it.

Any spark plug wires rerouted so that they are near any ABS wheel sensor harness can cause problems, too.

I didn't think computer software could read brake codes?!?!
Maybe I'm not using the right software?

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

Well BT96SS's car is OBD-2, which is probably why it picked up the codes that you guys couldnt on your OBD-1 cars.

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

low voltage in the charging/electrical system will hrow an ABS INOP

when my alternator was going south if I let it idle or in heavy traffic as the battery would lose power the INOP light would come on.

My ABS INOP light, Brake, and ASR OFF light come on at the same time in my 00 SS, what could be wrong with mine? Have any of you had the same happen to you?

Probably low voltage as already mentioned. Have your charging system and battery checked.

Re: "ABS INOP" Light?

i am having the same problem on my 94 z. my light has come on occasionally for the past six months or so. i replaced all pads(and one caliper). i bled the system also, though i didn't know that you are supposed to use a special scanner to assist in bleeding the system. the question that i have is, will this abs inop or the red brake light on the dash make the rear brakes not work at all? the red brake light on the dash didn't come on until right after i changed the caliper(driver side, rear). i now have no brakes at all in the rear. i can get the rear tires off the ground and turn the wheel with my hands as someone holds down on the brake pedal. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

this is my first experience with a forum, so i hope i put this in the right area. if not please advise. thank you.
