6 inch play in steering wheel.....

This is for a 96 LT1 camaro. I swore I had this steering problems before I took the power steering out on this. I can't remember for sure though. Could no power steering cause the steering to have a 6 inch play before the wheels start to turn? If this turns out not to be it what else do you think can cause this big of steering play. Thanks for any help.

Definitely check the rag joint, and also the inner/outer tie rods, mine is darting a bit nowadays due to the inners being worn.

rag joint and tie rods. If its not one or both you really have some work to do.
