1997 Z28 Rear Disk Rotor replacement

Hi everyone, I just purchased a 97 Z28 30th anniversary edition that only has 41k miles on it. Car Fax reflects this. The car very much looks like the low mileage that the odometer reflects, with the exception of some surface cracking of the white leather seats.

Problem is that the back brakes and rotors are both worn and need to be replaced. I had a 95 Z28 and put almost 80k miles on the car and never had to do this. The 95 was a stick, this one is automatic - not sure how much difference that would make.

Is this unusal to only get 41k miles out of the rear brakes and rotors with an auto tanny?

Front brakes have plenty of meat, but I am guessing that they were already replaced.

I'm the original owner of my 94 auto and my rear brakes pads wore down to the metal at 31500 miles. The fronts had plenty of pad left.

rngilliland,

Thank you for the input!

Pretty odd but glad to see I dont have a freak car.

So after the first set of rear pads/rotors, did the replacements wear more along the lines of what you would expect out of a rear set of pads/rotors?

Sounds about normal. I got my '97 at 27K mi and the pads in the back showed a lot of wear. Replaced them at 43K. Fronts were around 80-90K, don't remember exactly. Apparently about 2:1, rears to fronts is not unusual.

I don't really know for sure. I never had to replace the pads again but my rear brakes don't seem to work very well. I put around 60,000 more miles on the car but then noticed that with the rear off the ground and the trans in gear the brakes would barely stop the wheel from rotating. It has LS1 rear brakes now but they seem to work about the same.

My rears wore out in less than 50K. Replaced the rotors with Baers and the pads with Performance Friction Z-rated. Car has maybe 85K on it now and the rear pads still look like new. The fronts have never been replaced, and still have at least 1/2 the original pad thickness.
