There are people saying things along the lines of let's go somewhere else just because cmotorsports does not want to lower the price on something they probably don't make very much money on anyway. That just bugs me. I'm just saying they are more than welcome to go somewhere else, but expect to pay more.

And yes, I would rather pay full price. I would pay full price from Thunder too. There are certain vendors that always take care of their customers, and we need to support them, not beat them up just so we can save $20. Keep that up, the good vendors will go out of business and all you'll be left with is companies like racenet, which has very low prices but the absolute worst customer support on the planet.

 

I beg to differ on that. Just look at their "normal" price. I think all that Zdawg guy/gal is trying to say is that CM's prices are already killer. And for people to be wanting an even better deal is just ludicrus.... Or, really more selfish.

Think of it like this, on a more focused spectrum.. Pretend there's a bunch of gaint rhinocerii in a deep, dark sucluded area of a forrest. And way in this forrest there's a desk. And on this desk there's the smlimline stapler than Bill Lumberg took. In addition, there's the twenty three little piggies that cried wee-weee-weeee all the way home. <- and if you actually read that you're now dumber.


Seriously, CM is like the "outlet" store of retail stores.. Their everyday prices are already great, and their service is second to none. With their everyday prices already being pretty_damn_low, it's awful hard to keep the doors open to sell a bunch of cams and not make any money off of it. If I worked for CM I would've probably posted up on here and told y'all to **** off if you're gonna whine . But that's just me.

So this thread has gone from a Cam GP interest thread, to a thrash us for wanting a discount. Had CM granted us a GP would you still try to tote your views?

As far as CM making any money on cam kits, I doubt they make much at all but just because they don't make any money on kits doesn't mean they don't make money on other items. Certain items can retain higher markups and still be considered a great deal while others, due to the market, can't get away with it as much. Computer industry is a prime example of this, they don't make money on the systems they sell, they make their money on the services and accessories/upgrades they sell.

So what if predator felt that we could get a little better deal, I'm sure if CM offered a free bag of lolipops, people would have felt that was still something. When you guarantee a company XX amount of sales for a certain item, that company is going to make more profit overall due to the increased sales (generally topping what they would have normally selled). This also brings in new customers, some of which the company may have never had and most that have a good experience with said company will do business with them again in the future (thus increasing their customer base and overal revenue). So asking for some type of discount, whether it be $xx off or a even a %5-10 discount on your next purchase, isn't asking too much in my opinion.

You guys hit the nail on the head with this one.

I can tell you as a Comp Cams dealer that we really don't make much money on these parts at these prices. Comp cams is one of those companies that allows you to sell their parts at whatever price you feel fit. So guys like combo sell cams at $250 a pop.

Comp's price structure is setup in 3 levels (unless you have ALOT of cash)

Suggested Retail, Jobber, and W.D.

On something like a LT1 camshaft, custom grind or CC306 they all cost the same.

Suggested Retail is : $345.96
Jobber is: $259.47
and W.D. is: well I can't tell you everything.

So when you see a camshaft going for that far under retail, and on top of that under Jobber. Be very happy. That is one killer deal.

Now some places have some retarded prices on stuff, because they have the market for that product, so we all live with it.

Now companies like AFR have some good policies. We have a minimum price that we can sell their products for. Which is good because then we can all make money on them, and nobody squeazes anyone else out of the market. I can tell you that as a dealer of both that is a very good thing because we don't make a huge amount on their stuff either way.

Guys like CM have very low prices, low enough that shops like mine have to compete with their prices so we can also sell stuff. All that does is cut our profit margins and at some point it's not just us that suffers in the pocket book, service or support will suffer too. I personally pick out a camshaft for every order I do, I don't have 50 cams that I pick from, but a few that I tweak to get the best one IMHO for you based on my experience. We all have to offer something to get your bussiness. The money I make on a Camshaft I feel is what I'm being paid to pick out the right cam for your combinaton. Time=money. These street cams should have a pretty low price to them anyways because the specs of them can become public knowledge very quickly. If you were buying a race motor for a very competitve racing class, you shop at the place which is going help you win, so you would expect to pay more for a camshaft/motor that has alot more research and development in it. If for some reason those specs of that camshaft you had in your race motor got leaked out, the choice if you would/could buy cams from that engine builder any more will probably not belong to you. Again that risk is another reason race stuff costs more, because that risk of giving out free R&D is priced into it.

Belive me the BIGGEST rule in all of racing is "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?"

As Alex 97Z28 M6 said, expanding your customer base is a good thing. One thing people should think about is the number one rule of salesmanship. Don't tell them what they can do for you, tell them what you can do for them. If you want to get deals from places think about what you can offer them, not how cheap you can get parts from them. I've been approached by guys for various things, building motors, selling heads etc. One thing that you really have to think about is, who is going to benefit more? If you can answer that question and the answer is you then that deal is not going to work out.

One more thing to think about. It costs all of us XX amount of money to stay in bussiness. When someone comes in to lower the prices more we either have to sell more stuff or save money elsewhere. In this market there is not a infintate market, so selling more stuff doesn't work. When you are buying race parts, price is one of the things you can judge a component by, but you rarely get something you don't pay for. In this bussiness the sad truth is you have 3 options on what you are looking for. Speed/customer service, Price, and Quality. You only get to pick 2. If you want stuff faster it costs money, if you want better stuff it costs money. If you want cheap stuff, you either have to wait or take lower quality products. This is not always true, but in todays age when we can all find the best prices on parts really quickly because of the net it definately applies.

Guys I once was a customer like you. This is my view from the other side of that coin, but I do understand where you all are coming from because I am still there in some respects too.

Awfully presumptious to say that. But then again, I'm not the one that has to back up that claim.

 

When I ordered my cam for my car I knew what kind of duration and lift I wanted but I wasn't sure what lobe seperation to go with. I talked to the guys at Combination Motorsports and they were extremely helpful in helping me pick the proper lobe seperation. Unlike alot of shops they do not base their cams on what is popular with everyone else. Their cam decision was based on dyno numbers (not saying that is the proper and only way to make a decision). They have tested a few cams on the dynos and drag strip and pretty much know what works and what does not. Combo gets an A plus in my book.


I do agree there are a few vendors out there that do not know the difference between and cam and a crankshaft. They are more into making profit than making the customer happy. I have talked to a few people that are clueless regarding the product they advertise. That is not the case with CM

 

yOU KNOW WHAT??? I agree. This is the WRONG hobby to be in if you're El Cheapo. Their price is the best already!!!! At least $50-$60 cheaper than the next lowest in line. Frugal and Modification do not mix well.

i'm kinda new to these guys. i'm looking for a cam kit, i currently have a few bolt ons, i just ordered jet hot lt's and y pipe, i was going to go w/ the lt4 hotcam kit and timing set. i'm not going to port my heads not enough $. what would be my best cam choice? i still want it to be a daily driver, however i wan't it to lope and sound like an animal. does cmotorsports sell cams like that?
