Oh, What Luck!!!
Oh, What Luck!!!
I get hit by an entire semi truck and the car is still okay. My wife ran over an electric motor that fell off somebody's trash truck and bent the K member, put a hole in the oil pan, dented the passenger cat, dented the Y pipe, chipped off a couple of the fins on the side of the tranny, put a small hole in the tranny, put a small ding in the exhaust just behind the rear axle and who knows what else. I know the Y pipe is resting on the crossmember for some reason and that of course makes a rattling noise. I still haven't figured out why the exhasut is resting on the cross member. It doesn't appear to be bent though.
It's up on ramps now but I haven't put the back on stands. So I don't know what else is bent in the back. I guess I'll have to look at this as an opportunity to do a few upgrades.

sounds like your night is going a lot like mine is right now...
OUCH!
may want ot look into an upgrade, any cance you can salvage the hole in the oil pan for a oi cooler?
mayeb a full catback?
As for the exhaust laying on the cross memeber, not sure on ls1s, but on v6s, there is a hnager under the passenger seat, if its not hooked up the exhaust will lay on the crossmember, if it was my car that is the first thing I would suspect, but I am not sure if ls1s have it.

Chuck,,You can't win lately !! I'm sorry to hear about yet another mishap in the SS. There is too much junk in the roads here in central florida. I was lucky enough only to slice a tire and put a small dent in my fender well on my truck when I hit that piece of radiator. I'm sure if I was in my old Z it would have probably done a lot more damage. Anyhow,,Good luck at getting it repaired soon. Maybe since the wife was driving it,,it won't be so hard to twist her arm ,, and she won't gripe about modding it...
Hey man,
Sorry to hear about your luck
sounds like a good time to install a BMR or wolfe racecraft tubular k member huh?
I talked with you and jim at the last MCO meeting and thing's where starting to go your way it seemed like...Then something else happens...man I can't even begin to imagine..Sorry to hear man.let me know if i can help in any way. Later,
Carter

1) How hard is it to replace the oil pan?
2) I was thinking about a new BMR tubular K, long tubes and Y pipe. But I'm not into drag racing, so the weight reduction from the K member doesn't intrest me. Are they structurally as rigid as the factory K? I need as much rigidity as possible. You'd know that if saw how hard I drive the car at the autocrosses. The last thing I want is to hurt my structural rigidity in the front end. I'm in the points chase so far this year. Top 5 for sure. I just have to see the results from this month's event. I was in 4th over all and think I should have moved up 1 or 2 spots at least.
3) Are there any long tube header / Y pipe sets that are 100% bolt on without any welding or modification necessary?
Thanks.
Seems like a tubular k-member woudl help with rigidy... Do peopel run them in road racing or autocross? Weight reduction woudl be nice especially in the front end of that thing.
As for the Oil Pan I woudl assume its much easier if you do it with the k-member. On my 85, camaro, I put my car on stands, then a jack on some boards, and jacked the motor up unhooked tranny mount and I was able to get the oil pan off without too much effort, never put it back on since my motor was trashed and useless.
By the way with longtubes, remeber ground clearance... do not want ot here them scraping, on some of those corners at an autocross.
I remember back when we had the event at the airport where you drove my car, the guy with the ls1 trans am, wiht Lingenfelter on it said he didn't want to race because of ground clearance on his longtubes.

The oil pan on your 3rd gen is a bid different. That's what I was thinking too. But there isn't any room between the K member and the pan on an LS1. And the the tranny is actually mounted to the oil pan too. So if I was gonna pull the pan, I'd replace the K member too since it would be out already. I think I'll try to patch it on the car. If it doesn't work, I'm still not out much. It's worth a shot.
hehe actually I thought the same exact thing but didn't want to offend anyone
his excuse sounded almsot as bad as my "if I had race tires!" excuse
I asked him what specific lingenfelter stuff was done to the motor and he said "Yeah, you like that don't ya" Never answered my question.
he looked like Vin Diesel
whats the hole like? seroiusly can you maybe sneak something like an oil cooler intot it or do oyu have to take off the oil pan to get an oil cooler in.
Are they rules ok if you put in a K-member?

Hey Chuck,
Well the easiest way to replace the oil pan is to undo the motor mounts and lift the motor out "not all the way out though, just enough to acess the pan and wiggle it out" and do it from underneath the car..if the k-member is out then it would make it much easier to install along with the longtubes! I have the SLP longtubes W/ off-road Y-pipe..they are 100% bolt on..just not fun to install hehe.if you replace the oil pan..do the longtubes at the same time..makes it 500 times easier.Alright let me know if you need anything else..oh and the K-member will increase rigity somewhat...but that convertable needs all the diet it can get

The transmisson hole is a very small puncture. Almost like a pinhole.
As far as competition classifications go, I think I can do just about anything I would want to do to the chassis and suspension and be able to stay in prepared class. If I change internal engine stuff that would put me in race class.
