Re: hurricane version 2.0

I wouldnt do anything, but it happens that I am flying out to Ohio Friday morning.

Get this though... my friends aunt calls him yesterday while we were all playing poker and said that she just got of the phone with her friend in the CIA. He told her that he is flying his family out of florida today because of the huricane. And that it is so powerful or going to be so powerful it is unclassified and the public is not going to be told for fear of mass panic.

We all called

I wouldn't be so quick to fly that flag to high.

My military friends were in briefings today about it and the word that came out of it was that Andrew would be considered child's play if Frances hits as strong as she appears to be.

As a long time Florida resident, my status is wait until later in the week and see what happens, however, my happy white butt will head outta town quickly if the need arises.

holly crap

did anyone else catch the 11pm update on channel 2? the weather lady seemed to act odd, kind of disturbed, choaking on her words.

Re: hurricane version 2.0

i really hope this one doesn't hit us. my house was fine from charley, but who knows if this one is as powerful as it's expected to be. if it's expected to hit us dead on, i might drive home to sarasota to avoid most of the destruction. it sucked being w/o out power for 2 days, i don't want to go through w/ that again. and who knows what will happen w/ school, will they be lenient if we miss classes?

Well, having lived in Florida almost all my life, and having seen over 100 hurricanes go by, I would add a couple things:

1. It's way too early to tell where this one will go.

2. Under most conditions, if they are heading directly toward us that far out, they will usually not hit us because they turn north way ahead of time. Very rarely do they stay on a straight path, and even less of the time do they turn south again after turning north.

Just my $0.02

Re: hurricane version 2.0

LOL, the CIA investigates hurricanes now? I guess that makes sense since they don't seem to do anything else very well

Anyway, like Dave said it's entirely too early to tell exactly where this storm is headed. Alot depends on how strong that ridge pushing down from the north is, and how long it stays around influencing Frances' motion to the west. If/when that ridge weakens that's when the turn to the NW will take place. However, it's not looking like there will be a definite outlook on that until about wednesday. But this storm looks like it will pass through Hebert's Box which typically signals a south Florida hit. Again this is all just speculation at this point.

And the pressure as of 11am was 956mb, with 120mph winds. Which is about dead on, 954mb usually translates to about 125mph winds. While this storm does look impressive it has experienced a little shear over the last day or so and has weakened a bit. It is by no means "unclassified" or more powerful than Andrew(at least not right now). Andrew came ashore with sustained winds of 145mph, gusts to 175mph and a minimum pressure of 922mb. Right now Frances is nowhere near that.

Re: hurricane version 2.0

I have lived in the Melbourne area for 35 years and have watched countless storms turn away from us at the last moment...hope this one does too...it's a big one. As of now my house is one of the dots on the projected path. The worst part of all is that I am not at all worried about my safety or fresh water or any of that. I am most worried about my car. It will be in a garage but if we take a direct hit my garage door is not going to stand up to those kinds of winds. I'll be watching this one closely.
