car misses during acceleration.

I have a 96 v6 Bird with 72,000 miles. The car misses during acceleration, the missing starts around 1000 rpms and goes up to 3000. There aren't any codes showing up. It idles fine and runs fine once up to speed. Any clue on what the issue may be. I'm starting to think it could be the timing chain. Help.

Re: car misses during acceleration.

The coils are less than 6 months old, so are the plugs. The wires (MSD) are about a year old. I had the missing problem before I replaced all of the coils and plugs. The wires are on the plugs solid and have no signs of burn through. I did a screwdriver check on the injectors, replaced all the o2 sensors.

Check your fuel system too. Pressure and flow. I chased an acceleration miss for a while that turned out to be a fuel pump that put out ok psi, but poor flow....

Re: car misses during acceleration.

PredatorBird, I got the exhaust installed yesterday, it cost me about 200, to get it installed with new tips. I love it. The sound is great. I now understand the rasp at high rpms, but it sounds great. If I an get this missing problem figured out I will be ok. Thanks again for the deal..

Re: car misses during acceleration.

If you've already done all of the ignition stuff... I'd run with the fuel pressure/flow theory. Change the fuel filter lately?

Re: car misses during acceleration.

Out of curiousity do you knwo for sure your injectors are good? I remember you said awhile back you had a lean bank code?

As for ignition stuff, its supposed to be killer in these car of crap just dieng left and right. But like you said your stuff is pretty new.

Made skim through this thread.

Re: car misses during acceleration.

The SES light went off when I installed the exhaust, and I had it scanned, no codes... (weird)

This morning on my way to work, the SES light came back on, scanned the car, LEAN bank 1 and bank 2. I have to take the car in, I'm at a lost of what could be causing the lean codes and the missing during acceleration(which is hasn't done during any type of acceleration for the past few days).

If your getting lean codes I think its on the fuel end not hte ignition end... have you thought of getting new injectors or looking into it?

Re: car misses during acceleration.

Low fuel pressure. Under acceleration the increased fuel consumption is too much for the fuel pump to keep up with. Fuel pressure drops, the motor starves for fuel and stumbles. As soon as the fuel flow catches up it probably runs normally.

Fixes:
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Pressure regulator
