Bracket racing at OSW
Anyone get into this? Whats the deal I know you pick a et and get as close to it as possible as well as a perfect RT. Any special equipment needed? any money involved?

The beauty of bracket racing is that it makes the race totally dependent on driver skill. Any car can run, from 20sec vans to 9sec trailer queens.
No special equipment needed, and it's 25 bucks at OSW on Saturdays. I saw one that lasted almost to midnight and was won by a Maxima running hi 14s.
I don't do it personally because my reaction times suck the big one

Bracket Racing is very involved to be rel good at it however, I'll hit some high points.
Usually there are 3 classes set-up at the track. This keeps cars of similar ET's running each other and the payouts are different. Usually something like 0-9.99, 10.00-13.50 and 13.50 and up. This also keeps the high budget cars from running 17 second Hondas (a safety thing also) and a separate class for motorcycles.
You get a couple of practice runs and then you decide on your dial-in (what you believe your car will run ET). You pair up in the staging lanes (luck of the draw). The timing clocks are set-up with a handicap system based on what each car has dialed in. (a 14.00 dial gets a head start on a 13.60 dial). The yellow starting lights come down based on your dial (one lane before the other). You leave on your side of the starting tree and hope to get a good reaction time and be very close to your dial without going faster than your dial(faster and you loose, unless the other car is even faster under his dial). The combination of your reaction time and your dial versus actual ET difference will determine who wins (generally first to the line without breaking out.
OSW has bracket racing every Saturday night. Cost for "street" cars (13 second or so) is $25 and I believe the payout to win is $300. They pay back 8 places.
Check NHRA.com and see if they explain the format a little better than I did. I have been bracket racing for a lot of years and believe me ... there are lots of "tricks" to being good.

I might give it a try. I have 2 cars that I may run. Besides the Z28 I have an old 77 vette that is basically stock but can pull out of the hole without breaking the tires loose for more than a couple of feet. I figure that would be a more consistent runner as opposed to the Z 28. I'll check it out next month if it dosn't rain.
Hey I race points and I love it. I really does depend on driver skill. I wont get into how it works bc Larry so magnificently explained it so I dont have a chance to akt like I know what I am talking about. But it is alot of fun. I do belive the pay out is 500 though for first but not sure. If you come out look for me and say hi. It sucks that it got rained out this sat. but what can you do. They ran the jr. dragsters the pro-street cars and the bikes then called it I didnt even get a practice run in. Oh well

What kind of R/ts are expected to be seen, I doubt they will be as bad as test and tune, but when I was going to the track once or twice a month nstead of like once evey 2 months like now, I was consistant .56X and lower on my R/Ts, I am a little rusty, but am always below .7s

What kind of R/ts are expected to be seen, I doubt they will be as bad as test and tune, but when I was going to the track once or twice a month nstead of like once evey 2 months like now, I was consistant .56X and lower on my R/Ts, I am a little rusty, but am always below .7s

I raced my Z28 out there a few times and got within the top 3 in street class. I think there's only 2 car classes and one bike class (11.99 and faster, 12.0 and slower). But it is a lot of fun. Don't worry about what R/T's are expected, people in the street classes aren't all great drivers. I just wish the one time I got 2nd I had realized there was money to be won, because I just left after that (DOH!)..
Also watch out for the people who dial a lot slower than they really are (dial a 14.0 for a 13.0 car) and just as you go to pass them at the end of the track they slam on their brakes and you break out... Seen it a number of times. You gotta know what you run and if you feel you're going faster than expected you probably are...

Mods to come: Bonneville leather seats, shaved door handles/locks/trunk key, 17x8" wheels (or 13x7" wire wheels - undecided), custom exhaust, Caprice SS emblems, 95-style slant rear windows.
