Blown Transmission
Blown Transmission
I was experiencing the great A4 tranny shudder the past couple weeks and the tranny finally gave out. Nothing like doing 70 MPH on I-95 when you feel like you ran over two speed bumps and hear a bunch of crap rolling around in the tranny. I lost OD and reverse. I had to get the car towed from Viera to NLP/Norris Motorsports to get the tranny rebuilt. Hopefully, I didn't ruin the brand new converter installed last week. Just a word of warning about the shudder, best to get it checked out.

You ain't kidding. I have it up at Next Level Performance now. It looks like the planetary gears came apart. It was a mess. I will probably have Mike put in a beefed up rebuild with a shift kit. I already have the cooler.

Maybe they can put your convertor on a core charge tranny to put some fluid thru it to clean out the chunks, but thats playing a very dangerous game with the new tranny. Make sure you get a billet acumulator valve, and a transgo shiftkit, and a cooler. It should rock when you get it back.

Thanks.
Re: Blown Transmission
Yes, It only did it on part throttle acceleration. I originally thought it was the converter not locking so I had a new one installed. It was still doing it after the converter so I tried the some Dr Fix Shudder fix. Still not relief. I was on my way to brevard county doing 70 when I felt 2 large thumps and the sound of crap falling apart in my tranny. No reverse or overdrive gear only drive. I had to limp it 3 miles to the next exit and have it towed from Viera to Mike Norris. Now awaiting a new tranny and converter cleanout. Only 36,000 mile on the tranny and no track time on it either. From the look of the tranny it looks like the planatary gears came apart then everything else. It looked like the thing exploded inside.

Re: Blown Transmission
one thing that I have seen when I worked at the dealership in High School, was that once or twice, we received new torque convertors that had a little metal shavings in them. If there was crap in your 'vertor, thats what probably killed the tranny. I have never heard of such a low-mileage unit having its planetaries destroyed. A dirty convertor is my guess on what offed your tranny.
Re: Blown Transmission
I thinks is was from the time I had the first TC installed at Harrison Perf. The car never really felt right after they messed with it. It started acting up from there.
Re: Blown Transmission
Well just ordered a Tranny from FLP. Level 4 4l60E. Good up to 550HP. I'm hopeing this works out better. I also have the converter on its way back to Yank for a cleanout. Hopefully, It will be all back together in time for the Winter Nationals.
