Exhaust Manifold Bolts

I've decided to pull the engine. What are the chances the bolts are going to break off in the aluminum heads and if they do what is the fix? 1996 Z28, LT1, 6 speed manual tranny. Oh yeah, can I pull the tranny and engine from the top?? I know these subjects have been covered a bunch but I never seen what transmission's were being pulled during the discussions.

Thanks

soak the bolts with penetrating oil for a day or 2 and you should have no problem. Even if you dont use oil the chances of you breaking the bolts off in the head are slim. Because the heads are aluminum you are most likely to strip them before the bolt breaks. Yes you can pull the motor with the trans still bolted up. I have never done it but I imagine it would be easier to pull the tranny from the bottom then the motor from the top.

Pull the whole thing out the bottom.

There's no reason to remove the manifolds when pulling the engine. If the manifolds have never been off, don't worry about the bolts - the factory used a small amount of anti-seize. It's when bolts are reinstalled dry when bolts snap.

Dont know why you'd want to pull the tranny through the top.

Just got done with mine a couple weeks ago, pulled the motor though the top and put it back in that way. Was somewhat of a pain though.

I wouldn't worry about pulling the manifolds to remove the engine, but if you are, soak with some PB blaster for a day or so ahead of time. However, with aluminum heads, you should have no problem removing the bolts.

Ok so I decided not to pull the engine, got everything fixed under the car and the cam in and was putting the lifters, rockers, and pushrods in. I've got a new problem. I torq'd the rockers to 25lbs, and then proceeded to torque to 50. The push rods started bending like tooth picks. What the heck, I think my car is haunted. The car is new to us. It had comp lifter and rockers and was told they were comp push rods. Before we started working on it u could here the lifters tapping and when we took them out they were all very loose. Here is my guess, let me know how far I'm off. Either the push rods are to long and thats why the last owner didn't torque them down or the are nor new push rods and have weakened after 170K miles.

You are not supposed to torque down the rockers - that's a good way to bend and break stuff. You have to set VALVE LASH. This isn't an LS1. Another victim of no-research-itis.

I had to re-read your post...I thought perhaps you meant head bolts or even manifold bolts but rocker arms?

Time for some more good news- after you pull out all your mangled pushrods might as well pull out your lifters too since they prol destroyed too after getting completely bottomed out. And since you wrenched them down so hard take a look at your rocker studs and rockers- good chance they are prol gouged up too..

I would invest in a Chiltons manual for any other future projects....

You have most definitely bent some if not all of your pushrods as well as crushed a few lifters.

Rockers are not torqued, lash is adjusted! http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#adjust_valves

Replaced the push rods and got the car back together and running. I didn't replace the lifters, I'm hoping they were not damaged. Can I check to see if they are working by pulling the valve cover and run the engine to make sure they are all oiling?

At the very least you should have pulled the manifold and checked the lifters. If you don't have any problems you got lucky.

Yes..you can verify if lifters are oiling while the engine is running. If they are damaged they may still oil properly but not perform up to requirements under performance conditions. Lets just hope you got lucky.
