I've only read good things about them. This for example is one regarding the very product you speak of.

GMHTP magazine likes Golen.

Do a "search". In the past month, I believe there was a report of a broken crank snout in a Golen-built engine. I don't think the original post ever clearly identified the cause of the failure, but there were a few responses discussing possible issues.

Fred is likely talking about my issue, posted on here awhile back.

I purchased this engine in it's broken state and had it analyzed to find the cause of failure. They used a cast Eagle crankshaft which broke near the front main bearing. The oil galley plug directly above the journal was pressed in too far which starved the front main of oil, causing it to overheat, weaken, and ultimately break. I was told by someone at Golen that "Eagle cast crank failures are common," and they would not stand by the damage. The engine failed at low RPM after 400 miles. I have since rebuilt the engine using quality parts using a quality builder.

I wouldn't use them.

I have heard good things about them, but I have also heard bad things about them.

Besides the bad things I have heard in this thread about them the other one was they had an engine that refused to quit smoking and they would not fix it.

A friend of mine has a Golen 383. It runs great until ~4500 rpms where it starts to shake so bad you have to let off the gas. I wouldn't buy from them with so many other good builders out there.

We have built many LT1 engines with Eagle cast and forged cranks. We also offer upgrades to Compstar and Callies crankshafts and rods. Check out our website then give me a call if interested.

I was thinking of this thread... but the OP never really responded on the details of the break, or the cause. In fact, that was his last post on this site, and he hasn't even been back to the site since 10/22.

I've been looking at what to do with my engine......

I think I'm going to go with a build from ATK High performance. They are offering a 355 4-bolt short block $1299 shipped to my door. There are no forged components in the build. It's what I'm looking for.....good solid bottom end 4 bolt main that will handle 450 at the crank. I'm not sure I can do much better than that on rebuilding my short block correctly(I'll make it a 383 over the next couple years as I get the money).

This is the 355 short block....just a stock rebuild....($1299 shipped)

....and there is a 383 short block too......all forged components....($2799 shipped)

i have seen a couple of the cast eagle cranks and what they are doing is grinding metal between main journal 1 and rod journal so thin that they are loosing strength. i believe it is for weight lose. SCAT uses the same company in china to make their cranks but they do not grind on this area. also the grind and polishing on the eagle cranks is horrible. i did up a quick picture here where i have personally seen breaks. and i also have an example of a crank where the rear actual broke.

i just wanted to make my post clear that it isn't Golen Engine that is grinding the cranks that way but what is coming to the consumers from Eagle.
