I have a 1995 Z28 I just bought a set of c5 Corvette wheels. They are 17"x 8 1/2 front and 18"x 9 1/2 rear. The tire dealer put on 225/17 tires in front because he said that anything wider would rub. I thought that 245's would work on the front. Am I wrong.

You are correct, they will fit fine.

SS Camaros and WS6's came with 275/40-17's up front on a wider wheel. 245's will be fine considering 245/50-16 was an optional tire size for 4th gen F-body cars.

Just to be clear, you need a 245/45-17.
