Tall Valve Covers?

Hey guys,

So I upgraded to 1.6 roller rockers for my LT1 project and I understand that you can cut the baffle on the stock valve covers to make it work. I'd prefer to just replace the valve covers rather than cut a structural support out. I know most people have done it, but regardless...

That said, I remember reading an old thread about modifications to tall valve covers or the accessory bracket or the alternator itself to make it all work. Unfortunately, though, I can't find it now and from what I remember not only was it so old that there weren't any pictures but the ebay auction the guy was recommending for valve covers was expired and doesn't work.

On that note, can I go with these even though it says "wont work because it won't clear the alternator" after some slight modifications to the alternator or bracket or whatever?

Try a "search" for pictures of modified stock covers. You don't have to cut the internal stiffeners, you can just flatten the edges out a bit.

I have - I know exactly what has to be done on the stock valve covers but I also like the idea of having some "bling bling" valve covers - as well as the idea of not having to modify the structural support.

I was hoping more so that someone knew what has to be done for these valve covers that "dont work" on LT1s due to the alternator. From the thread I read it sounded like it was a modification to the back of the alternator or the alternator bracket - grinding a hump down or such - but there were no pictures to really demonstrate what it was that was done.

First "Search" and now "post in a different section"... thanks for your help.

Edit: Found what I needed on a different site, thanks anyway.

For future reference in case someone happens upon this thread while searching, the page which I found the information that I needed was:

Those valve covers you posted in your first post look similar to the ones I have. Although mine weren't listed as tall, they still had baffles in them that had to be cut out to clear my RR's. The baffles were big and thick and the only easy way to cut them out was with a plasma.

I installed 1.52 Pro Mags on a 383ci LT1. The locks were high for the stock covers. I purchased ProForm covers which were +.25 inches higher than stock. Also, I used an aftermarket gasket (Felpro). The gaskets were expensive, but quality. The ProMags have a larger trunion bearing, and, are a bit wider than most others. The breater baffle had to be reduced in size (with channel locks) with a little bending action. Also, I had to go with modding stock guide plates due to tappet misalignment (I have AFR190 heads). You can go with the Isky guides for easy installation. I got all the stuff from Summit. I really like the valve covers (polished alum with chevy logo), and, cleared the Comp ProMag locks. They also are available in black and crome. Also... I had to grind the Alt for passenger cover clearance. Hope this helps. B.

I was trying to help. Sorry you took it as sarcasm. Your OP indicated you didn't want to " cut a structural support out". I was simply trying to point out that you don't have to cut the structure out, so if that was your assumption, it might have been a bit of helpful info. But since you appear to already have all the answers, I'll avoid your posts in the future. There are a number of people here who actually appreciate an attempt at help.

And what site would that be? "Appearance" is one of the forums here on CamaroZ28.com. I am not the Moderator of that forum, so I don't see how it is "my site". We routinely try and direct people to the correct forum. Again, if you take that as non-helpful, you're entitled to do that.

Carry on.

Damn, tough crowd.... guess they don't quite have the holiday spirit.

Sorry for the misinterpretation - intentions and context isn't always clear on the 'net. Seemed like sarcasm and lack of an attempt to help by telling me to search after I had stated that I had done so and then to post in a different section when the question at hand was what modifications needed to be done to the alternator/bracket to make the tall valve covers fit. Regardless, though, information has been found, links have been posted so others can find an updated how-to from LT1Engine.com and everyone can move along.

Merry Christmas

X2, from Injuneer

some of us would rather just ask the question than search,I am guilty of this as well. I think Ive asked the same questions twice

some stuff needs to be asked regularly, to update the procedures or parts, or links
when some of the old posts loses their pictures, Its almost worthless

always search first someone here has had the problem before,
whats the best cam? whats the best tuner? which valve springs? which gear?whats an A3+1?

"I thought you were going to quit showing your signature"

thanks Injuneer and Shbox and everyone else that has helped me in the past and future

Merry Christmas
