Im About To Button Up My Rebuilt Lt1 With A New Comp Cam. Comp Cams Says Its Not Necessary But Should I Degree My Cam?

 

You will get answers all over the board on this. My suggestion is to degree it and get it to spec. HOWEVER that being said, I put all this money and time into my own engine and guess what? I did not degree my cam. It runs great and makes power where it is supposed to. The risk is the cam will be advanced or retarded different from spec and will not make power in the RPM range it was specified for.

 

Heres the deal. If you degree the cam, you will ensure that the timing chain is on correctly and you will ensure that the timing events are accurate relating to the grinding of the cam. If they are off, you make changes before going any farther.

Also if you run into a situation where the motor is running like *** later on, you can rule the cam during troubleshooting because you know its good because you degreed it. It does not take long to do especially if the heads are off. With the heads on its a bit more tricky but I did it in 30 minutes.

My recent Comp ground cam was dead nuts on. The one before that was advanced almost 2 degrees which is not much but close to being a problem.
