valve adjustment

im having my 94 z28 head gaskets replaced by a back yard mechanic that my buddy recommended to me. it was idling fine b4 the teardown but now that its all put back together it started right up, sounded like it was misfiring & then died(fell on its face as my buddy put it). they tried starting it up couple more times but did the same thing & i guess the mechanic came to the conclusion that he will have to take the valve covers back off & adjust the valves(thats what my buddy tells me). does this sound like a common issue when head gaskets are replaced? im guessing he's gonna adjust them with the engine off, & if he does will spark pugs absolutely have to be removed or not? i just thought i'd ask a few ??? to be a little more familiar with what exactly is going on since right now im worried & hoping my car is in good hands & doesnt end up costing more $$$. my buddy is supposed to call me back tonight & let me know if thye got the car running right or not(crosses fingers). can any damage occur if the valves are not adjusted by the proper procedure? is there a link with the proper steps to adjsut them with engine off & on?

thanks in advance for any help

Valve readjustment is necessary after putting the heads back on. It's just part of the process.

Yes, there can be damage if done incorrectly.

No, plugs do not have to come out.

Info on several ways of adjustment can be found here.

i noticed that it says if you over tighten the valves on your page shoebox that it will just not run or run ****ty if it does run. could you possibly mess up the valve at all if you over tighten??

drippin on passenger floorboard i would asssume heater core since its right their. if it is you could either have fun taking your dash apart and installin a new one or get a little bypass kit and live with no heater for a little till you feel like spendin a day on replacin it

Way overtightened could kiss a valve off the piston.
