Question Opti C&R or whole thing??

I know my opti is causing random cylinder misfires and is making my rig load up resulting in some ugly backfires and pops..

So, I've heard both sides and want to know if replacing the cap and rotor might be the best bet or if I should pony up and spend the extra $180 for the whole damn thing??

Opinions and thoughts welcomed.

Thanks,
Ivan

IMO, I'd replace the entire thing... It's a good-sized project swapping these things, and not the kind of thing you want to do more often than needed. Do it right, so you've got nothing to worry about.

I started out just doing the rotor and cap. but it has ~95k on the motor and the opti looked like the whole thing needed replaced. I wouldn't really EXPECT more than 100k miles out of anything.
Bought a new AC delco opti off of ebay, 240 delivered. thepartsladi

Ivan ~ Question is: How much is your time worth? I've always replaced the whole opti ~ I'd hate to just change the cap & rotor then the bearing or optical sensor go out a few thousand miles later ~ also, I always change or rebuild the water pump when I do it.

Just curious how you determined that the opti was bad. Any PCM codes? Did you check other ignition components?

I followed Shoeboxes tutorial and had (almost erradic/sometimes none at all) bad voltage between terminal B and ground when cranking. Good resistance of coil...around 5.6k Ohms.

Only 2 codes were random misfire and evap system....don't have the numbers because the Ahole erased them when he turned the scanner off. He also "cleared them" but I know he coulda went back and got em. He was a tool and I was showing him how to plug the scanner in and get it going.

At least that's what I'm getting from the read. Let me know if I'm flyin a kite in the rain..

Also, what to pay at GM for the Cap/Rotor if anyone knows.

Thanks,
Ivan
