Deleting the air pump system

Ok, so ive had a ses light on since i got the car, the code is "secondary air injection system malfunction"

if i just take it all out is that going to cause any problems?

since its already throwing the code what more damage could it do?

I plan on getting it tuned out in the future but i would like to get rid of it to clean up the engine compartment a little.

If you take it out you will have to get the code deleted from the PCM so that the SES light wont stay on. Also you will have to plug the holes in you're headers and one in the intake tube.

If you have the PCM tuned, it won't matter if the whole system is removed, you will not get any more AIR related codes.

Your PCM is throwing a code because there is a fault with the AIR system. You can either repair it and get rid of the code that way, or remove the AIR system altogether along with having the AIR specific codes removed from the PCM via tuning. If you go that route, it will not affect the driveability of the car. The AIR system is in place to reduce startup emissions.

Sorry that this is not my thread, and this may be a dumb question, but if you delete the system, are you guaranteed to fail CA emissions?

Sorry for the dumb question, but what exactly does the air pump do (besides the stupid "pump air" answer) ?

When you first start your car, it is running rich. The air pump basically injects air into the exhaust manifolds in order to reduce the emissions upon startup.

i think the air pump is just a way of tricking the system. if its putting out X number of fumes, then you add air to it, its still producing the same amount its just deluted by air.

the entire air system is pointless to me.

Depends which code you have now. In the OBD-II cars, there are two different codes, P0410 for lack of air flow to either bank of the engine (detected by O2 sensors, when the pump is cycled as part of the diagnostic), and P0412 for a fault in the electrical supply to the AIR pump (often a blown fuse). Removing the system completely will guarantee you have both codes, not just one. Will not affect driveability. But it will prevent you from seeing the SES light come on when you do have a code of some sort that will affect driveability.
