opti question

I want to switch from non-vented to vented opti for the cheaper price and because the vented is supposed to be better right? I need to know if it can be done and where I can find a write-up on how to do it

If you want to use the original OEM vented opti, you will have to change out the cam and the timing cover and purchase a new opti harness.Shown here http://para.noid.org/~muttvette/opti.html

You can buy an MSD replacement that will fit your application and is vented and not have to change a thing other than add the vacuum hoses.

Or you can modify the existing one per this write up.http://www.corvettefever.com/howto/16758/index.html

Yes, the LT4 HOT cam has the longer dowel, and the larger diameter pilot hole in the nose. You need to carefully check the length of the dowel, to insure it isn't set too long.

Shoebox has info on the vacuum lines. Your 94 will not have an avialable nipple on the driver's side of the intake for the vent line. I used the connection for the EGR vacuum solenoid line, and installed a "tee" so the Opti vacuum line could also be connected.

is all this really worth it? seems like LTCC would be a better alternative.

If I decided to not go vented, how do I use the LT4 hotcam kit?

Sort of apples and oranges... I upgraded to the vented Opti AND switched to a system that is the equivalent of the LTCC. Whether you gain any increased reliability on the optical sensor portion, with the vented conversion, is somewhat subjective. But its the optical sensor that failed in my original unvented Opti, due to rust accumulation. So it seemed to make sense to upgrade to the vented system.

Obviously, the vented conversion makes more sense when you are upgrading the engine with a new cam, and already have the timing set and cover already torn apart.

No problem using the unvented Opti with the HOT cam kit. You just shorten the dowel pin.

You can modify the unvented Opti to include a vent system. Try a "search". There was an article in a Corvette magazine that is often linked as a "how to". Alternatively, I believe the MSD cap for the unvented Opti includes a vent connection.

It's cheaper to just buy one of the aftermarket optis that includes venting.

I hear good things about the ac delco. and the vented version is $100 less. thats why I started this thread. to see if I could make it work for my aplication. and it seems like its not really easy. but not too hard.
