Head milling, how far is safe?

I have a set of le2 heads, I had a valve guide problem and sent them to the machine shop for bronze liners, they told me they should resurface the heads. it took .005 to clean them up. I think this is the 3rd time they have been cut. I am worried about deck thickness, how far is safe and how can you tell? I am going to have the machine shop cc the cumbution chamber, 58cc is stock, how low is to low? and is there another way to be more accurate? I can say the last time they were installed the intake was not machined and the bolts line up great.

you can cut them alot but I would not do much with your current set-up.

You cut alot you need to check piston to valve clearance etc. Intake will probly need to be cut.....so just get them cleaned up and put it together, is what I would do.

AFAIK stock is 54cc and after a little searching I found that around .008=1cc. I'm pretty sure after Lloyd ported them he had them milled back down to stock cc. You could probably take around .020 or so off and still not have to touch the intake, but it also depends on your deck height. Only way you are going to know for sure is if you put it together. Why do you think it's the third time they were cut?

original engine popped head gasket= first cut, pulled apart 4 years ago for le2 porting=2nd cut, worn valve guide=3rd cut.

My heads looked great, the valve guide problem was my own fault for using the wrong guide plates, we are getting off track here! my concern is wanting to know the deck thickness of the heads. is "cc"ing a good way to get a close estamate on how far it's been cut? and how much to take in effect for when L.E. polished the cumbution chanber.

Ported heads usually have chamber work, without knowing how much was taken out of the chamber in the first place CCing them now wont tell you a thing.

C'mon. With all those irrelevant links posted you simply own up to user error? What fun is that for the conspiracy theorists?
