Still burning oil after 1500miles (new 383)
Still burning oil after 1500miles (new 383)
My engine was built for 200 shot nitrous, but I changed my mind and I'm not using nitrous. My pistons are Diamond with Diamond Racing Piston Rings Set 4.030 Bore 1/16 1/16 3/16.
The reason of burning oil can be the rings?? I see the bluw smoke at idle and WOT. So its definitely from pistons. Is it time to pull the motor??
I know you will say, maybe rings couldn't seat properly, but whyyyy? I did everything correct!!! Its a bulletproof new engine (combination of oliver, lunati, diamond) and only 1500 miles on it.
I also have a knock retard, I can heard the knock coming from bottom of the center console. Maybe its all related, dont know.
Here people say that noise is normal, the forged pistons make that noise. But the noise doesnt dissapear after the engine warms up.

Have you done a compression check to see if you have any broken rings?
A low frequency knock is NOT normal, hot, cold, new, or old!
Some early LS1's had piston slap, but this doesn't apply to your engine.

I will do the compression test, but car runs really strong, and I don't feel any misfires. If there are any broken rins, it shouldnt pull strong right? But as you say someting must wrong, because it burns oil!!
I will check the plugs. But hey today we checked the oil and we added almost 1 lt 10w 40. The last time we added the oil was 3 weeks ago. I know lt1s and Canton has the oil leak problem, but this doesnt look good right?
Im having the same problem...New 383 went through a little less than 3000 miles and now its burning oil like crazy smoking out of the oil cap and dipstick...but no smoke out of the exhaust! It's plain crazy for a new engine to do this. My 350 that was previously in the car had obviously been dogged by the previous owner as evident by the blowby and worn slicks that came with the car, but it still lasted longer than the 383 even after i blew the headgasket. Mechanic says it's due to busted rings, or a burnt piston, but it runs too smoothly- give me a shout if you figure this one out, and ill give you a shout when i get word on mine!
I have diamond pistons in my LT1 383.
I also had excessive oil burning and was scared that I had a ring problem, actually I was sure of it. I had oil all over the inside of the intake and throttle body, I was sure the cam reversion was blowing the oil into the intake. It was so bad there were puddles in the intake. 230/234 cam.
I really lucked out since My stock LT1 heads were ported, some of my rocker screw bottoms were exposed in the intake path, this allowed oil from the rockers to come down the thread and burn horribly. Used about a quart every hundred miles!!
I asked the head guy if I should have sealed them he said YES! So, I sealed them and my oil problem instantly went away. So thankful for that!
I would check your intake gaskets, or things similar to my problem before ruling it a ring problem.

By the way, I have that knocking noise at startup, usually goes away when fully warm, but takes awhile.
My LT1 slapped as well when stock.
My clutch rattles a little bit at idle due to the cam, sounds like a knock but goes away when put in gear sitting still.
