6000 rpm cam

i was reading a post from madwolf about camshaft selections going bad because people were getting the gm 847 cc 306 cam and the rpm levels were too high for what they woudl be running. i am only going to be running a little over stock rpm's for now. i don't want to make the wrong selection of the cam. i would like something better than a hot cam but will settle for it if it looks to be the best for my set-up

The Crane 227 has been mentioned a number of times as being a very good performer while staying within the stock rev range.

227 is 6 grand cam. Get rid of ported MAF and Hypertech. Use money from sale of Hypercrap for Mail order tune, including 160 State. JMHO

BUBBA, you mention the 227 cam alot, your replies about it is what made me choose the cam. I have not had it to the dyno yet, but it seems to want to keep pulling past the stock shift point.
I am going to have my PCM sent in for a mail order, what would recommend me getting the shift points set at?

Sorry, but can't help you there. I had the 227 installed in my brand new 97SS M6. I went with the cam because at that time it was considered a plug and play baby cam with good low-end, stock idle and easy tune.

Another member who had the same car, but a heavier vert had good things to say about the cam---he later went with a 396.

The 227 is considered an RV cam, i.e, it is designed for heavy vehicles which benefit from low end torque.

It is not a top-end cam, nor is any other cam with such a profile, but for out of the hole response it works very nicely esp if you can get some traction (that is why it would be a good choice for an A4).

The tuners on this site will be able to tell you where your shift points should be with this cam since they have probably done a lot of tunes for it.
I'm running 4.10s which keep me busy rowing through the gears. I would think too that if you go with other than stock gears, e.g. 3.73s with the A4 that your shift-point will need to be adjusted to get the most out of the cam.

Lots of people here brag on the hot cam over other small cams and maybe they are right, but I am satisfied with the 227. Hind sight, I might have decided on a bit higher duration, but the dual-pattern difference works for me in the SOTPs department and for a weekend cruiser that is what I want.JMHO

Well I guess that explains the great ET and 60 FT. With it untuned ( I am almost sure I am having injector issues ) at about 4500 RPM it seems to be starving for gas, hope that isnt just because the cam has ran out of breathe.
But then again, it will pull real hard right before it shifts, that is something I cannot explain.
At the bottom of every gear it feels like N20 kicking in : )

Awesome cam, a little bigger than the 227, but still has excellent low end TQ but has more top end than the 227. They are both excellent cams however.

The Hotcam is also a good, economical choice.

Even though its currently a heated debate (lol), it is possible to achieve some good numbers with the hotcam. Numbers in sig or you can read my entirely too drug out thread about my car haha
