Replacing Valvesprings

Few questions from a newB:

I am in the process of installing an LT4 hotcam kit in my car. I'm to the part of changing the valvesprings. I've decided to do this with the heads on (because I like cruel and unusual torture). Anyways, I got the first spring off and found that the valvespring has a little stamped steel cup on the bottom of the spring between the spring and the head. The kit comes with new ones, but do I have to replace them? They don't just slide off...looks like the valvestem seal?? is in the way.

While on the topic, should I change the valvestem seals? If so, how do I do that.

Finally, what is the best valvespring compressor to use. I bought one at Napa for like $30 and I can tell I'm going to throw it threw a window before I finish this job.

Thanks!

did you get the one with the hand crank on it? if so it will save your hand if you can get to a welder and weld a nut on the top to use a rachet or wrench...

No, I bought one with a handle that flips closed and compresses the spring. Handle can be changed out with a bolt which works better, but it still sucks.

I would change the valve stems seals and replace the seat locators. The old seals will pull off with vice grips. The new ones get tapped down until they are fully seated. I use a deep socket to perform this; there is a tool you can buy. You want to make sure you don't tear the seal when sliding down over the top of the valve stem. They have a small cap that fits over the end of the valve stem to help install.
