biggest, nastiest cam for stock heads

Ok so I have decided the next major mod will be cam and valvetrain. So my question is: What is the nastiest cam I can run with my stock (will be ported later) heads? This is a weekend car so I don't care about gas milage, ect. This will be a slow parts build up (married with kids). So LE1, 2, 3 or custom grinds are not feasible at the moment. Remember, I will port the heads later on down the road.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

go with a BRE (Bauer Racing Engines) custom grind all the way, he can match it exactly to your setup, ( weight, rpm range, gears, flow number of heads, everything)

I would like to go the BRE route but I have to piecemeal the project over time. Remember I will not be able to do any headwork for a long while, the cam and valvetrain will have to be used with the stock heads for a long while. So how does the GM847 act with stock heads? Will it be choked down too much with my current set up? I do not want to spin the bottom end too much and jack up my bearings. The "When are you going to sell that" would be unbearable.

I wouldn't waste your time going with a big cam.... go with a 503 or something. A proven winner...that will make more power than a BIG cam that will run like crap and be slower than other cars. Cams need to match the package i.e. you get the new heads you get a new cam

I'm putting it this way b/c I have made all of these mistakes before

I have a Comp Cams 236/242 ground on a 110 lsa with the valve springs to match. Thats as big as you can get unless you go solid roller. $250.00 plus shipping and its yours.

yeah thats why i haven't used it...YET
no honestly a camshaft is the brain of your engine...not the computer, a bunch of mismatched stuff=slow junk that runs like crap and you never get it right...i've been there too many times, I ran a 240@.050 cam in a stock 305 motor it runs like crap etc. turns sky hi and went to another cam a little smaller and the car went 108m.p.h first time at the track

just sit back and see what others have done and what works good...R&D and you will be miles ahead

Ok lets get down to the nitty gritty:

1) 503

2) 306

3) XE 224/230

What do you boys think is the best for my situation and why?

Same thing.

I'm not a big cc306 fan.

What does having stock heads have to do with not doing a custom cam? Custom cam, $300, more power and better area under the curve, or spend $270 and get a cam that isn't matched to your combo.
