Hotcam Dyno Numbers

Well, I finally made a trip down to F-body Central (great shop for those in the Baltimore area) and put my car on the dyno. The car put down 322rwhp and 333rwtq on a Mustang Dyno. This is up from 278rwhp that I dynoed on a dynojet a few years ago with Macs, CAI and a magnaflow muffler. See the chart below:

The car is a '95 Z28 M6, 109,000 miles with the following mods:
Moroso CAI
Airfoil
Mac Headers
Gutted cat
Borla Catback (smallest opening plate)
LT4 Hotcam (218/228 .492/492 with stock rockers)
LT4 Valve Springs
LT4 Knock Module
Accel Optispark
MadZ28.com tune

I would say the car is running pretty good for what's done to it. While these numbers dont show anything revolutionary, I think they do show that the LT4 hotcam is a good performing cam at a good price. I daily drive my car, 200 miles a week and love it. Theres very little cam surge and the gas milage has remained pretty much identical to stock.

People will bash the hotcam all day and then some, but that sucker runs good and has run good for years.

Wow! That is a SOLID torque and hp curve. No break up at all. Car must be very well maintained. Excellent numbers for what you have done. I see you put that you have stock rockers. Possible you have 1.6s?

Thanks!

The rockers are 100% stock. I didnt have an extra $200 to blow on upgrading them so I just reinstalled them when the cam went in. I believe stock is 1.5:1 stamped steel.

If I can find a cheap set of 1.6:1 roller rockers at a good price, I'll throw them in and see what it does. My budget is kinda tight right now though... I graduate from college in December and I'm saving up for a 4 banger to commute to work in.

I bought the 1.6 roller tip rockers off of ebay. I'll let you know how they work out. They are only 68.95 new.

I ran ProForm 1.5 full roller on a ZZ4 cam for almost 30K and before that on stock cam for 10-15K they are still in good shape and will endup on another motor one of these days. CAT is the only brand of rocker I would specifically avoid, bad bad things.

At 109K miles, did you also have to replace the cam bearings? I would love to just do a cam and RR's, but at 160K miles I'm thinking too much hassle for an old engine.

I did my hotcam at roughly 109,000 mi. The front cam bearing looked ok so I didn't bother changing them. This setup is only to have fun until I need a rebuild, then I will probably be going with a 383 and LE3 setup.

No bearings were replaced. I suppose you could replace the front bearing with the engine still in the car, but I dunno if theyre supposed to be aligned in a special fashion... and if they are supposed checked for alignment, I dont think that is possible with the engine in the car.

I've been meaning to get over to F-body Central and check them out.

Those are good numbers for a hotcam on a Dynojet. The fact that you made those munbers on a Mustange dyno which are ususlly about 10% lower is awsome.

No. You can't change cam bearing with the engine in the car.

SteveO: Congrats on the good #'s. I loved my old hot cam setup.

There was a thread no too long ago where members accused me of lying about my hot cam #'s. I did 345hp & 346tq, but I also had the: 1.6 RR's, m6, and it was on a dynojet. So your car is running very strong. Either way be on the look out for 'cantonracer' and 'bubba'. One of them swears they have seen a dyno atleast once, and the other is just plain stupid. They gave me a bunch of grief because my results conflicted with what they read elsewhere by other non users on the internet.

Great #'s considering stock rockers... throw some on there when you get a chance and you'll probably pick up another good chunk of #.

[QUOTE=RE AND CHERYL;4216552]I've been meaning to get over to F-body Central and check them out.

I've been using them for a few years now...Good people, prices, and a great in house tuner...Very knowledgable and a riot to be around...They're the reason I run what I run...

Good numbers SteveO...Did you make a 1/4 pass on the dyno? Thats a lot of fun!!!
