timing question
timing question
can somebody explain to me what all i need to do to get the proper timing on my 94? im putting in a new cam so i have the cam sprocket and timing chain off. The dot on the crank sprocket is at the very top, so i know i need to put the cam sprocket back on with the dot at the bottom, but what do i need to do with the dowel pin and the optispark? i've been using shbox for help with a lot of this, but he has a vented optispark so i cant use his site for this part.
Re: timing question
The 94 unvented Opti isn't driven with the dowel pin. Its driven by a splined shaft. There is a "missing" tooth on the splined shaft that needs to be matched up the a "bump" on the Opti and cam sprocket ends. It is VERY easy to assemble it incorrectly, so be extremely careful to match the splined shaft up correctly.

Re: timing question
alright cool thanks. just couple more questions though. What happens if the opti was turned while it was off? Will it mess up the timing?? (god i hope not) And because the opti isnt driven by the dowel pin, i wont need to shave the pin, or will i?
Also Shoebox, I probably wouldnt have even attempted this cam swap if it wasnt for your site. So thanks a million!

Re: timing question
The opti is keyed as well as the stub drive and the cam gear. Just line it all up. It does not matter if anything was turned. Just make sure the dowel pin does not interfere with anything if it is very long.
