Is the y-pipe idea possible at all?

Ok long story short.. I hate my y-pipe so I want to change it. Right now it's 2.5" diameter with two 2.5" cats.

I want to buy the mufflex 3" y-pipe.. but I need to pass emissions. The cats on y-pipe are perfectly fine.. 2.5 months old in fact. So I don't want to shell out 400 on two 3" cats. I want to cut out two sections of the y-pipe and weld in flanges (like on the header collectors) And on the pipe I cut out.. again weld in flanges. This way the "straight pipe" I can bolt and unbolt at will. And with my 2.5" cats.. I will weld on 2.5" reducers on both sides, and flanges.

The whole idea behind this is I want to keep my 2.5" cats and be able to install them for emissions, and after that, unbolt them and install the full 3" straight pipe.

If anyone has seen the FLP exhaust system you can buy.. thats kind of what I'm looking for. Only I need to use 2.5" cats in a 3" y-pipe.

I know I've seen cats welded into mufflex y-pipes.. so what do you think? Can I pull this off? Any problems you guys can think of? Thanks!

It should work fine. Sounds like alot of work just to add a half an inch to a y-pipe and pass emissions

Thanks guys!

30 bucks a each?? Do they have terrible flow or something? Having 3 inches would be nicer. And I might even be able to do all the welding myself.. exhaust shops charge you out the a$$ around here...

Let's see... 250 = about 400 Canadian after shipping etc I bet, 100 for flanges, 80 for cats.. wow, easlily a 600 price tag.. all because the exhaust shop ef'ed up my y-pipe...

Thanks again guys! Was mainly making sure it was possible.
