What exactly does this thing do?

You know that black plastic thing at the bottom front of a camaro, the part that scrapes everytime you go up a incline go come off a decline. Its long, goes from wheel to wheel, well what does it do? I took it off yesterday and ever since my car has been getting hotter than usual. Could this cause this?

that piece deflets air up to your radiator buddy... it is an important piece when dealing with the cooling capabilities of your car. do yourself a favor and put it back on... so what if it scrapes... atleast your car wont over heat...

Its called an air damn and it diverts air to your radiator too cool it ..So yes if you took it off that would make your car run hotter....Put it back on or look for rebuild kits...

If you leave that off, the radiator won't be properly cooled as it should so your coolant will get warm, very warm. I'm surprised your car hasn't overheated already. Without the air dam there to push cool air onto the radiator, your coolant doesn't really get a chance to dissipate any of the heat it has collected.

People have issues with this also when they get front GFX and don't put on the longer air dam commonly.

It sounds worse than it is when it scrapes. Its not that big of a deal when it does. When I first got a camaro I thought that it was my front fascia scrapping. Used to scare the crap out of me. Your car won't overheat to a dangerous level, but will run at a temp comparable to sitting in traffic at a stop all the time. If you have a manual fan switch then you can leave it on high all the time, but, Do yourself a favor and put it back on.

That's the airdam. Like the others said, put it back on NOW.
