Painting car good deal or not?
Painting car good deal or not?
well got some money to get the car painted same color and all and so far I have had quotoes of:
http://members.cardomain.com/hambone3441
$2500 ppg lifetime warranty on paint
$1850 sherman williams 3 to 5 year warranty
$1700 ppg or dupont lifetime warranty on paint
All three places are pretty repitulible so I am kinda leaning towards the 1700 one. Does that sound to cheap? Just want to get some thoughts on it

Yeah the $1700 seems good to me... I am a little worried about the price being on the cheap side but he is the only painter has a computerized mixure for the paints and a bake thing for the car. (sorry dont know what it is really called). And I live in sothern georgia where you can buy a three bedroom, two bath house for 75K, so our standard of living is not to high and helps keep prices down on some stuff, esp. gas. LOL. Premium isnt cheap. Well I am still leaning toward the 1700 unless some more people can tell me thats not a wise choice. Thanks to all.
Rob
p.s. The painter also said he uses four coats of clear, isnt that pretty good?

Have you checked out cars from each place? If not, this is what i would recommend. If you do go with the cheap one and it turns out bad, you will be kicking yourself later and wishing you had gone with a better shop. Just my opinion.
With a paintjob you're gonna get what you pay for. The less you spend, the less time and effort are put into it. For 1700 I don't see the painjob being done correctly, I.E. doors coming off, fenders, nose, side skirts, rear bumper cover, and hatch all coming off, and then having everything painted. That way you get a uniform look with all the jambs being done, and about the only thing not sprayed would be the engine bay. I would expect to pay at least $3000 for a decent properly done paintjob. Think about it like this. Do you really just want everything masked off at the weather stripping and that's it?
I paint as a hobby myself. I use DuPont and have used PPG in the past. They are both excellent.
DuPont only recommends 2 -3 coats for most of their clears. More than that can cause problems. People think more is better but that's not the case.
I'm not not sure which product line the shops are pricing because there are several within each manufacturer's line.
I typically use the best stuff for topcoats and I'll have $600-700 in material cost (including primers, sealers) depending on the color.
Material cost is the one thing that the general public has a problem understanding. For instance, I'll tell people I'll do the job for $1000 plus materials and it doesn't sound too bad. Then they hear the material cost and it's not so good.
Using good materials is key though. I've got 8-10 year old DuPont and PPG work out there that still looks like new.
Just something to consider on your purchase!

nothing wrong with an inexpensive paint job, what you need to do is look at their prior work and judge for yourself. Ask to see previous full paint jobs, especially cars like yours and talk to the owners to see if they have had any problems. This should be true with ANY paint job, whether its a $10,000 custom job or a $300 special at Maaco
