Is it better to city drive in 3rd or drive?

I have heard that the gear reduction in drive (aka overdrive) causes alot of heat and it is actually better for the tranny to drive in the city in 3rd. I know it will be a lil annoying having it in third, but i can deal with it if it will keep this thing alive.

any thoughts?

i always keep it in third in the stop and go city driving, that way its not always shifting into OD at like 40 mph. it saves the OD band.

That is something I have also heard...when I had my IROC I drove in 3rd and not OD unless I was above 50mph...what I had a tranny guy tell me was that the OD sprag was the weakest point in the tranny and that when it was in OD whenever you romped it it still put unecessary stress on it unless it was disengaged by pulling it down to 1, 2 or 3 so from that day forward I always pulled it down...I also heard the same about the heat thing as well...

Well i don't know how it is in the fbodies. But in my stang i just left it in D instead of OD. The OD is very weak in those already crappy AOD trannies. The only time i put in it OD is when i was cruising on the highway. If the OD is weak in our auto trannies as well then i would just leave it in 3rd.
