Patman, or anyone that knows about oil and filters

I have FLPs on my car and the collectors run right under the filter. I used to use Mobil 1 filters but after putting the LTs on my car I found the Mobil 1 is VERY close to the collector. So just this last oil change I bought a PureOne (By chance) and found that it is a tad bit shorter, but I am still worried about it being so close to the collector. Expecially after reading that the walls of the PureOne are .009" thick.

Should I try to rig up a heat sheild for the filter or not worry about it?

There are aluminum slip on coolers for oil filters (seen em in Summit). Does your car have the factory oil cooler? (sandwhich style) As long as your headers are coated and about 1/2 an inch from them the radiated heat shouldnt effect it much.

I had to take off the factory oil filter to get the FLPs on. (They run that close to the filter) The Mobil1 filter was less than 1/2" from the collector but I think the PureOne is just about 1/2" maybe 5/8" even.

How about an oil filter relocation kit?

I installed an oil filter reloaction kit when I did my FLP's. It was a PITA but I installed it on the frame rail right behind the fan so it should hopefully work as an effective cooler as well.

Do NOT add those little aluminum fins that wrap around the filter... with the header collector so close, that might INCREASE heat pickup by the filter, not reduce it.

I had a similar problem (close proximity) with other headers, and noticed the difference in oil temperature, particularly when a collector leak was blowing hot exhaust right on the filter.

I would wrap the collector with some header wrap for a few inches on either side of the filter, to reduce heat loss in that one area. Just don't overdo it. Don't put any heat wrap on the filter.

Good point Fred, I didnt think about absorbsion on that do-hickey. I have Hooker LTs that are coated and my closest primary is probably a few inches away, but I can stick my hand up there close by and it is pretty decent.
