4L60E Question?

OK I have a problem that I am sure I need a rebuild, but just want to clarify it. My tranny started to do this today, it drives normal under acceleration, but the moment I let off the gas it goes into sort of a nuetral state, when i drop it to Drive still a neutral state, but when the speed decreases it starts to shudder a little and ack like it is catching in gear, any ideas on what is causing it? Thanks

so if you drop it to "2" with your foot off the gas... the rpms WON'T shoot up and start slowing the car down?

Nope, only when I brake and slow the car way down does it try to engage, and then it is sporatic and shudders a little.

Look at the color of your tranny fluid, it should be kinda pink/red. If it's not, flush it, or drop the pan. That might help??

Just thought I'd add that...

Just had a tranny flush done about 2 weeks ago.
Fluid is good and up to proper level. The car has roughly 100,000k on it

Your tranny problems are only gonna get worse unless you rebuild it. Your lucky you got this far without a rebuild. I had to rebuild mine at 70,000 miles. Good rule of thumb is that if you own a rear wheel drive GM with any kind of power, your gonna blow a tranny somewhere between 60,000 and 110'000 miles. On the brighter side; I had mine rebuilt and it's been barkin 2nd gear ever since. Best move I ever made.
Good luck Bro,

Make sure that you check the transmission fluid level with the
car warmed up and in idle. I had the same problem only to
discover that the shop that had done the fluid flush did not
put in enough fluid (two quarts low). After I put in the necessary
2 quarts it was ok.

nope not a fluid problem. There is something else going on with it. I am trying to figure out what the problem may be, if it's electronic or mechanical. I'm pretty sure it's going to need a rebuild, but what to know why.....

Problem = Blown or Nearly Blown 3/4 clutch pack!

Solution = Rebuild w/ Reybestos Blue Steels, worth every penny....

Good luck

i had the same problem and i thought id drive it as long as it was driveable to avoid the $1,300 rebuild.. one morning i got in and put it in reverse to go to work and it went forward and hit my garage wall. every single gear was drive.. including reverse and neutral. i turned the car off and was able to shift it into neutral and push it out to the coldisac where i started it again and was able to drive it. the tranny shop said to drive it as long as its working again but if anything else happened to bring it in.. 2 weeks later my top speed was 40 mph and $1,285 later it still isnt right because of something electrical.. i've had the car at the shop for over a week. it barked through the gears once then wouldnt shift back down to 1st.. it tries to take off in 3rd. i would rebuild right away if i were u dont wait for more problems and make sure you check out all of your shop options.

I've got a similar problem on my 97. In OD it drives like normal, but if I manually drop it down to 3rd or 2nd (had 2.73's so no 1st gear select) it will drop down into a "neutral" state at about 1200 rpms if I'm off the gas. If I step on the gas it will jump up to the rpms where it is supposed to be and take off fine. It's like it "stalls" up with a high stall converter. I noticed this problem right after I got the car with 51,000 miles on it and asked a shop that specialized in fbodies. They said it wasn't a big problem and actually a safety feature that GM made to make it easier on the tranny. 24,000 miles later my car it still shifts great. Fluid is very pink and not burnt at all. I've always wondered if they were BS'ing me or if it was true. I figured when it goes, I'll build one the right way. Anybody know what really causes this?
