Keep #6 at TDC during heads/cam swap?

I am in the process of pulling my heads and changing cams. I have the #6 piston at top dead center with both dots on the timing gears right next to each other. Is this the way I should keep the crank when changing the cam? I have a good install guide but it isn't totally clear.....

If u got both timing marks together isnt that supposed to be no. 1 at TDC?? If the mark on the cam is at 12 o'clock and the crank it at 12 o'clock, thats no. 6 at TDC right? I could be wrong.

That's exactly backwards.

NOPE is the other way around!!!!

when BOTH dots are at 12 o'clock that would indicate the car is on the #1 firing order

So whether the bottom end is at #6 TDC or #1 TDC the valvetrain is at the same position going in the same direction (up/down)? How is that possible?

Hmmmmm... my Haynes says during t/c r and r, get no. 1 at TDC and both marks should be together, cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 o'clock. I always thought when u put a cam in u want it on the no. 1 at TDC, right? So, if u say that when the dots are together its at no. 6 TDC, how can u line up the dots with the cam at 12 o'clock I might be missing something altogether here, but I was under the impression that when the dots are together thats no. 1 TDC, and you all say when the cam is at 12, crank at 12, thats no. 1

lol no kidding that's the way I always thought it worked as well 6 for the cam and 12 for the crank....

I can see why you are confused. The Haynes manual is wrong.

I know it's crude, but here is what it looks like going through the firing order (large file) .

It does work for indexing the cam, it is just that you are at #6 TDC and not #1.

all that matters is that you have the arrow on your balancer pointing up.. that is TDC #1 and #6. one of them is in the compression stroke while the other is in the exhaust stroke.

it doesnt matter if you pull the cam out with the dots lined up at 12 and 12... but then install the new cam with the crank at 12 and the cam at 6.
